ISRO returns to form with the successful deployment of EOS-05, marking a critical recovery from past failures and a new era for India's geosynchronous imaging.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has concluded a quiet year with a decisive return to success, marking a significant milestone in its space exploration history. On September 4, 2026, the agency successfully launched the advanced Earth observation satellite EOS-05, demonstrating renewed operational capability and technical precision after a prolonged period of grounded missions.
The launch took place at 2.55 a.m. from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), flying on its 19th mission, carried the spacecraft into the intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit just 18 minutes after liftoff. This specific vehicle, designated GSLV-F17, represents a culmination of iterative engineering improvements, having lifted off a payload weighing 2367 kg, which is heavier than any previous payload carried by this vehicle type.
The successful deployment of the EOS-05 satellite is particularly significant as it restores confidence in ISRO’s heavy-lift capabilities. The satellite, affectionately dubbed the "Eye in the Sky," is designed to provide real-time imagery that will aid in agriculture monitoring, environmental tracking, and disaster management. It holds the distinction of being India’s first-ever imaging satellite to monitor operations from a Geosynchronous orbit, approximately 36,000 km above the Earth’s surface. Once operationalised, it will provide critical strategic data essential for national activities.
ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan confirmed the success of the injection, stating, “I am very happy to announce that the GSLV-F17 vehicle has successfully and precisely injected the advanced Earth observation satellite EOS-05 in the intended and required orbit.” He further noted that telemetry data confirms all valves are operating perfectly and the solar panels are deployed, ensuring the health of the satellite is "perfectly alright."
This mission marks a substantial recovery for the space agency, which has not conducted any launches since the failure of the PSLV-C62 mission on January 12, 2026. Prior to that, the agency faced back-to-back failures with the PSLV-C61 in May 2025. In response to these setbacks, ISRO adopted a cautious approach, refraining from any launch activities. Although seven missions were originally scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, none were executed until this breakthrough.
The technical achievements of this launch are rooted in a history of iterative improvement. Chairman Narayanan explained the evolution of the launch vehicle: “The first launch of the GSLV- D1 was done with a payload of 1536 kg. From that, we have gradually improved the performance of this vehicle by optimising the structural mass, improving the propulsion systems, and today we have injected the heaviest satellite, a 2367 kg satellite using this launch vehicle.”
This success also serves to rectify past technical hurdles. The EOS-05 mission effectively replaces the unsuccessful EOS-03 mission, which failed in August 2021. During the 2021 attempt with the GSLV-F10, the mission performance was normal during the first and second stages, but the cryogenic upper stage ignition failed due to a technical anomaly. The current success demonstrates the resolution of those earlier propulsion challenges.
Moving forward, ISRO officials indicated that the orbit will be raised in the coming days to place the satellite in its final Geo platform. The agency has now completed its 107th launch from the Sriharikota spaceport. The GSLV-F17 mission stands as a testament to the agency's resilience and engineering prowess, ensuring that India maintains a robust presence in geosynchronous earth observation.
The successful launch of EOS-05 marks a definitive end to ISRO's operational hiatus and signals a robust return to high-stakes orbital missions. By placing a 2367 kg imaging satellite into a Geosynchronous orbit, India has secured a strategic asset for real-time environmental and disaster monitoring that was previously unavailable. The resolution of the technical anomalies that plagued the 2021 EOS-03 mission, combined with the weight improvements seen in the GSLV program, suggests a new era of reliability for heavy-lift launches. As the satellite transitions to its final operational orbit, India’s capacity for independent strategic data collection will be significantly enhanced, securing its position in the global space community.
