The UN warns El Nino may break records, intensifying global droughts and floods. With near-certainty through February, experts urge immediate action against rising risks.
The World Meteorological Organization has issued a stark warning that the current El Nino phenomenon is set to intensify to exceptional levels in the coming months. This powerful weather event is projected to persist into early 2027, significantly raising the prospect of worsening droughts, floods, and extreme heat across the globe.
Forecasts from the United Nations weather agency indicate a nearly 100 percent likelihood that the event will continue through February. This represents the strongest level of certainty the organization has ever expressed in an El Nino/La Nina update. The naturally occurring phenomenon warms surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, triggering worldwide changes in winds, pressure, and rainfall patterns.
WMO chief Celeste Saulo told reporters in Geneva that if the current trajectory continues, the event may be stronger than anything since monitoring began. "Literally off the charts we have used for the past four decades," Saulo stated, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the climate shift. While the phenomenon is expected to peak toward the end of this year, its knock-on impacts for the climate will continue well into 2027.
Heat in the oceans releases more slowly into the atmosphere, a process that pushes up global temperatures the following year. The powerful 2023-24 El Nino contributed to 2024 being the warmest year on record. Saulo noted that the world "should not be surprised if this record is broken," given the current intensity. The agency described the event as "firmly established," warning of big impacts on rainfall and temperature patterns alongside associated risks of floods, drought, and extreme heat.
Although El Nino is a natural phenomenon and not caused by climate change, scientists expect it to exacerbate the heat of a planet already warming due to burning fossil fuels. UN chief Antonio Guterres stated that the phenomenon is "being supersized before our eyes." He emphasized that the science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up. Sea surface temperatures are rising, temperatures keep climbing, and the world is in the danger zone of extreme weather.
Guterres highlighted that the race now is between rising risks and the commitment to take climate action and protect people. "We must win that race," he asserted. The WMO classified El Nino events as weak, moderate, strong, or very strong, indicating that the current event is set to reach the highest level out of four. The agency reported an exceptionally high likelihood of nearly 100 percent that the conditions will continue to February.
El Nino typically takes place every two to seven years and lasts nine months to a year. Conditions oscillate between El Nino and its opposite La Nina, with neutral conditions in between. However, the current situation is fueled by exceptionally warm ocean conditions across the tropical Pacific. The WMO expects the event to strengthen further during the coming months to a very strong intensity.
Every El Nino is different, but major events often follow familiar patterns. These include drought across parts of the Amazon, Indonesia, and Australia, disrupted monsoons in India, and shifting rainfall throughout the tropics. The phenomenon can reshape weather and climate patterns thousands of kilometres away from the tropical Pacific. For September-November, WMO forecasts indicate an increased likelihood of above-normal temperatures across almost all land areas.
The index, which measures sea surface temperature anomalies in the central eastern equatorial Pacific, has strengthened significantly. It moved from an average 1.5C (2.7F) above normal between May and July. Weekly values between late July and mid-August ranged from 2.2C to 2.6C (4F to 4.7F) above average, indicating continued intensification. In some areas, subsurface ocean temperatures were more than 8C (14.4F) above average during July and early August.
Saulo warned that this exceptional El Nino has the potential to deliver a massive blow to communities and economies across the world. "We are already seeing disruption and devastation from droughts and floods, and we expect these impacts to increase as El Nino intensifies," she said. The WMO put disaster management authorities and climate-sensitive sectors like agriculture, healthcare, energy, and water on notice, stating there was no time to lose in getting ready.
The WMO described the atmospheric response as "pronounced and classic," noting rainfall patterns are shifting in response to the strong Pacific El Nino. The urgency stems from the fact that while the weather event itself is natural, its interaction with a warming planet creates compounded risks. Saulo noted that the knock-on impacts will continue well into 2027, meaning the window for preparation is closing rapidly. The agency’s data shows a consistent upward trend in temperature anomalies, suggesting that the physical forces driving this event are stronger than those of previous decades.
The current El Nino threatens to disrupt global supply chains, agricultural output, and public health infrastructure as it reaches its peak intensity. With near-certain conditions lasting through February and residual effects lingering into 2027, the long-term outlook suggests sustained pressure on water resources and energy grids. Historical data indicates that such strong events consistently lead to prolonged economic instability in vulnerable regions, making immediate adaptation strategies critical for mitigating future losses.
