A historic political shift occurs in West Bengal as the BJP-led government begins its term, promising development and welfare to citizens through immediate policy implementations.
West Bengal’s first BJP-helmed cabinet was sworn in on Monday, June 1, 2026, marking a significant political transition for the state. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that 35 MLAs would take oath as Ministers during the ceremony. This expansion of the Council of Ministers brings the total cabinet strength to 41 members. This number is three short of the maximum count allowed in the 294-member Assembly. The oath-taking event took place at Lok Bhavan in Kolkata, with Governor R.N. Ravi administering the oaths.
West Bengal BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya highlighted the new government’s commitment to fulfilling its election promises. In a post on X ahead of the ceremony, he described June 1, 2026, as a "new beginning of hope" for the state’s residents. Bhattacharya listed several immediate actions taken by the administration to demonstrate this commitment. He stated that free travel services for women have been launched in state government buses. Additionally, the full implementation of the 'Annapurna Yojana' has begun, ensuring government assistance reaches the actual beneficiaries' homes.
The administration and party workers have already entered the field to monitor the delivery of these benefits. Bhattacharya emphasized that the new government stands by the people for their development. He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas" as a guiding principle. The double-engine government asserts that the right to development belongs to every individual, including those at the farthest end of society. Honoring mothers and sisters, supporting the poor, and bringing smiles to families are core commitments of the new regime.
The list of officials sworn in today includes a diverse group of legislators. Among the Ministers of State are Joel Murmu, Hare Krishna Bera, Anandamay Barman, and Ashok Dinda. Other officials include Nadiar Chand Bauri, Vishal Lama, Shantanu Pramanik, and Moumita Biswas Mishra. The roster continues with Umesh Ray, Purnima Chakravarty, Kaushik Chowdhury, and Bhaskar Bhattacharya. Additional names on the list are Dibakar Gharami, Amiya Kisku, Kalita Majhi, and Gargi Das Ghosh. Further members include Biraj Biswas, Dipankar Jana, and Sumana Sarkar.
MLAs slated to take oath today include Dipak Barman, Tapas Roy, and Arjun Singh. Others taking the oath are Gaurishankar Ghosh, Kalyan Chakraborty, and Sharadwat Mukherjee. Dr. Sankar Ghosh, Manoj Oraon, and Jagannath Chattopadhyay were also part of the ceremony. Swapan Dasgupta, Arup Kumar Das, and Ajay Poddar joined the new cabinet. Dudhkumar Mondal was also sworn in as a Minister of State with independent charge. Malati Rava Rai and Indranil Khan were appointed to similar positions. Rajesh Mahato was also included in the expanded cabinet.
The induction of these 35 legislators represents a substantial consolidation of power for the West Bengal BJP. By expanding the cabinet well before reaching the constitutional limit, the administration signals a strong operational framework. The immediate launch of welfare schemes like the Annapurna Yojana and free bus travel for women serves as a tangible demonstration of governance. These actions are designed to build trust and validate the political mandate received by the party.
The presence of 41 ministers allows for specialized portfolios and efficient policy implementation across the state's diverse districts. This move suggests a focus on rapid administrative action rather than bureaucratic caution. The inclusion of various community leaders in the cabinet reflects an effort to ensure broad-based representation. Governor R.N. Ravi’s role in administering the oaths underscores the constitutional legitimacy of the new government. The alignment with the central government’s vision indicates a coordinated approach to regional development.
Looking forward, the success of this government will likely depend on the sustained delivery of these promised benefits. The implementation of the Annapurna Yojana will be a critical test of administrative efficiency. If the government can maintain this momentum, it may solidify its political position in future electoral cycles. The focus on women’s welfare and food security targets vulnerable demographics, potentially reshaping political allegiances in rural areas. The long-term impact of this cabinet expansion could be a more centralized and effective governance model in the state. The new momentum described by party leaders suggests a departure from previous administrative styles, aiming for a more active and visible government.
