Communist parties back Vijay’s party in Tamil Nadu, shifting political dynamics as Congress joins and DMK protests the delay in forming the administration.
The political landscape in Tamil Nadu government formation has shifted significantly as major communist parties have thrown their weight behind actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s party. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] announced on Friday evening that they would extend unconditional support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). This move comes after days of intense negotiations following the assembly elections, where no single party secured a clear majority. The support from these two parties, which hold two seats each, brings the total allied strength closer to a viable coalition, although TVK remains mathematically short of the 118 MLAs required for a simple majority in the 234-member House.
Adding to the complex political maneuvering, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has signaled its intent to follow the lead of the Left parties. VCK founder-president Thol. Thirumavalavan announced via social media that a high-level committee meeting would be held virtually to discuss the matter. Meanwhile, the Congress party, having severed ties with the DMK, has offered support to Vijay’s TVK with five MLAs. Despite these additions, the TVK, which won 108 seats, falls short of the majority threshold needed to automatically assume power, leading to a stalemate that has drawn criticism from various political quarters.
Tensions have escalated between the ruling DMK and the Congress party. Following the Congress decision to support TVK, DMK cadres in locations like Mayiladuthurai and Madurai staged protests against the national party. In Thoothukudi, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi formally requested the Speaker of the Lok Sabha to change seating arrangements for DMK MPs, marking a visible rift in the previous alliance. The DMK has criticized the Governor for delaying the invitation to form the government, arguing that the TVK should be allowed to prove its majority on the floor of the Assembly rather than through letters of support outside.
The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, has resisted immediate invitations to Vijay, citing the lack of a confirmed majority. This stance has been condemned by Congress leaders, including veteran Mani Shankar Aiyar, who termed the alliance with TVK as "dreadful" and an act of political opportunism. Conversely, the BJP has declared it will not support any coalition formation, leaving all strategic decisions to its central leadership. As the CPI urges the Governor to invite the single largest party to test its strength in the assembly, the state remains in a delicate political balance, with the VCK’s final decision remaining the pivotal next step in this ongoing saga.
The decision by the CPI and CPI(M) to support Vijay was confirmed during crucial state secretariat meetings held in Chennai on Friday. CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby stated that all involved parties would take necessary steps to ensure Vijay is invited to form the government. CPI general secretary D. Raja reinforced this, noting that the "larger mandate" is perceived to be with TVK. This unified front from the Left, combined with potential VCK support, places significant pressure on the Governor to act, as the Left parties have explicitly stated they are unlikely to support an AIADMK government.
Meanwhile, the DMK and its allies have intensified their opposition to the delay. Demonstrations in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur saw crowds demanding that Vijay be invited to form the government immediately. These protesters argued that the requirement for letters of support is an unnecessary hurdle and that majority should be proven inside the legislative chamber. The standoff has not only affected the immediate formation of the government but also caused ripples in public sentiment, with AIADMK MP Thambi Durai expressing hope that his party, under Edappadi K. Palaniswami, might return to power, citing strong public support during election tours.
The extension of support by the CPI, CPI(M), and likely VCK marks a decisive moment in Vijay TVK's bid for power. If the VCK confirms its support, the combined strength of TVK, Congress, CPI, CPI(M), and VCK would approach the majority mark, potentially forcing the Governor to invite Vijay to prove his strength on the assembly floor. However, the political fracture between Congress and DMK suggests a long-term realignment in Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian politics. The delay and legalistic hurdles imposed by the Governor may prolong political instability, affecting administrative continuity, as seen in the Governor’s directive on Class 12 results. If Vijay fails to prove majority, the door remains open for other alliances, but the current trajectory heavily favors a Vijay-led coalition, reshaping the state’s political map for years to come.
