Suvendu Adhikari becomes West Bengal's ninth Chief Minister amid high-profile political support, promising development and an end to criminalization in the state.
KOLKATA: Suvendu Adhikari has been officially selected as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal, marking a significant shift in the state's political landscape. The announcement came following a crucial meeting of newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs, where Adhikari was chosen unanimously as the legislative party leader. This development paves the way for him to become the ninth Chief Minister of the state, replacing the previous Trinamool Congress administration.
The formal selection process took place during a closed-door meeting attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who played a pivotal role in the transition. Shah, who had previously been instrumental in bringing Adhikari into the BJP fold in 2020, oversaw the proceedings. During a 30-minute discussion, it was noted that while eight proposals were received, every single one pointed exclusively to Adhikari. Shah emphasized that despite ample time allowed for alternative nominations, no other name was proposed. He highlighted Adhikari’s history as a "fighter" and his prior experience in administration, expressing confidence in the team's ability to deliver effective governance to Bengal.
Shortly after the announcement of his leadership role, Adhikari met with Governor RN Ravi to formally stake his claim to form the next government. The official swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10 am on Saturday at the Brigade Parade Grounds. The event is set to be a high-profile affair, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending in addition to senior Union ministers and chief ministers from NDA-governed states. Adhikari will make history as the second Chief Minister from the Midnapore region, following Ajoy Mukherjee.
In his address to party functionaries and the public, Shah outlined the ideological framework for the incoming administration. He declared that the new government would focus intensely on development, infrastructure, and good governance, aiming to realize the dream of "Sonar Bangla." A central pillar of this agenda is the eradication of what Shah termed the "cut-money culture" and the "rule of musclemen." He vowed that the politicization of administration and the criminalization of politics, which he argued hinder development, would end under the new regime. Shah asserted that the appointment of Suvendu Adhikari represents a personal validation of his efforts to bring stability and ideological clarity to the party's governance strategy.
Adhikari himself accepted the mandate with a commitment to a service-oriented approach. He credited the BJP’s "historic mandate" to the leadership of PM Modi and declared that the government’s motto would be to "talk less, work more." He stressed a collective governance model, stating that there is no place for individual ego or personal opinion in the administration, emphasizing that the party and organization come first. This approach is designed to address public expectations and restore faith in the political process.
Shah, thanking the people of Bengal for their "massive" mandate, highlighted the victory's significance as the culmination of a long ideological journey. He referenced specific constituents to illustrate the party's connection with grassroots protests and hopes. He noted that Ratna Debnath, the mother of the RG Kar victim, represents protest against the torture of women; Rekha Patra symbolizes protest against torture in Sandeshkhali; and Kalita Maji stands as a symbol of hope against poverty, with all three now serving as MLAs. This narrative underscores the new government's claim to be a vehicle for social justice and development.
Adhikari cautioned party colleagues against complacency, urging them to work towards increasing the BJP's vote share from the current 46% to 60%. He affirmed that all campaign promises would be honored and indicated that high-profile controversies from the previous administration would be revisited. Specifically, he announced that fresh commissions would be constituted to probe the RG Kar and Sandeshkhali cases. Furthermore, strict actions against alleged corruption and misuse of public resources under the outgoing government were promised.
The ideological foundation of the new administration draws inspiration from Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy, aligned with PM Modi’s vision of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" (Collective Effort, Prosperity for All). Shah also pointed to Adhikari’s past electoral success in Bhowanipore as evidence of his capability, noting the symbolic victory of defeating former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her own stronghold. He reminded functionaries to live up to the "expectation of the people" and never hurt their faith, framing the election result as a freedom from fear.
The transition of power to Suvendu Adhikari signals a definitive end to the Trinamool Congress's decade-long rule in West Bengal, reshaping the region's political dynamics. With the explicit pledges to dismantle the "muscle power" politics and institute fresh investigations into major social controversies, the new administration faces immediate scrutiny on its ability to deliver tangible improvements in law and order. The presence of Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Shah at the swearing-in ceremony underscores the central government's strong backing, suggesting that the integration of Bengal into the broader NDA governance model will be tightly monitored. If the promise of shifting focus from political rhetoric to infrastructure and administrative efficiency is maintained, it could potentially alter voter behavior in subsequent elections, aiming for the targeted expansion of the BJP's footprint from 46% to 60%. However, the success of this ideological shift will largely depend on how effectively the new government addresses the deep-seated grievances of the electorate regarding women's safety and rural development, as symbolized by the new MLA representatives from those movements.
