Congress leadership finalizes VD Satheesan as the next Kerala chief minister, defeating rivals KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala in a historic political shift.
Congress has officially selected VD Satheesan for the post of Kerala chief minister on Thursday, concluding more than a week of speculation and political maneuvering. This appointment follows the United Democratic Front’s sweeping return to power in Kerala, effectively ending the second consecutive term of the Left Democratic Front, which was led by Pinarayi Vijayan. The decision was finalized by the top leadership of the Congress party, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi, after extensive internal discussions.
The selection of Satheesan edges out veteran leader KC Venugopal, who was also a contender for the top job, highlighting the intense competition within the party for this crucial position. The landslide mandate for the Congress-led alliance was delivered on May 4, reflecting a decisive shift in public support away from the LDF government. Following this announcement, the Congress Kerala Committee is scheduled to meet the governor to formally stake the claim to form the new government.
Satheesan’s political journey includes a strong electoral base, having won the 2026 Kerala assembly election from the Paravur constituency. This victory marks his sixth consecutive term as an MLA, a testament to his enduring presence in the region. He secured 78,658 votes, defeating the CPI candidate E T Taison Master by a margin of 20,600 votes. He has represented Paravur for 25 years, having first won the seat in 2001, establishing a deep-rooted connection with his constituents.
As the leader of the opposition in the Kerala legislative assembly since 2021, Satheesan became a prominent face of the UDF campaign against the ruling Left government. He consistently raised issues related to governance and policy, positioning himself as a capable alternative to the incumbent administration. His role was further solidified when he took over as leader of opposition after Ramesh Chennithala following the 2021 elections, demonstrating his ascent within the party hierarchy.
The delay in announcing the next chief minister became a political story in itself during the last few days, with intense backroom consultations taking place in both Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi. The Congress high command weighed competing claims from three senior leaders: VD Satheesan, KC Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala. This period of suspense underscored the strategic importance of choosing the right leader to capitalize on the UDF’s decisive victory.
The Congress-led UDF secured a remarkable mandate on May 4, winning 102 of Kerala's 140 seats. Within this alliance, the Congress party emerged as the single largest party with 63 seats, giving it significant leverage in the post-election negotiations. This numerical superiority allowed the Congress leadership to have the final say in selecting the chief minister, ultimately favoring Satheesan over other senior contenders.
Born in 1964 in Nettoor near Kochi, Satheesan is a lawyer by profession, bringing legal expertise to his executive role. He began his political career through the Kerala Students Union and later became active in the Youth Congress, rising through the ranks via disciplined party work. His background as a lawyer and long-standing legislative experience positions him to address complex governance challenges. As the next VD Satheesan assumes office, the focus will likely shift to implementing the UDF’s policy agenda and addressing the anti-incumbency sentiments that drove the previous administration out of power. The rapid formation of the government suggests a streamlined approach to governance, aiming to deliver on the promises made during the campaign. With the Congress party firmly in control, the state may see a reorientation of policies towards the issues highlighted by Satheesan during his tenure as leader of the opposition.
