The Tamil Nadu Assembly has concluded its trust vote session with Chief Minister Vijay’s TVK government securing a decisive majority, signaling a new era of governance.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly has concluded its crucial trust vote session, confirming the stability of the new government. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party secured the confidence of the house with 144 ‘ayes’, defeating the opposition’s motion with 22 ‘noes’ and five ‘abstaining’. This victory marks a pivotal moment in the state’s political landscape, following the appointment of TVK spokesperson Rickey Radhan Pandit Vettrivel as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Chief Minister. TVK Minister C.T.R. Nirmalkumar defended the appointment, stating, “He is our media person... Anyone can have their own profession. But he has been our media spokesperson appointed long back.”
Ahead of the vote, the House was secured with doors closed and members restrained to their seats. The proceedings were marked by intense political debate and walkouts. Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin challenged the government's legitimacy, noting, “You do not have the 118 seats required for a majority.” He highlighted that a court ruling prevented the Tirupattur MLA from voting, reducing the ruling party's active members to 106. Stalin urged the new administration to move beyond digital gimmicks, telling the government, “Instead of governance through Instagram ‘Reel’, do some ‘Real’ governance.” He also questioned the ethics of the CM meeting AIADMK rebels, asking if this represented “change” or “exchange.”
The trust vote revealed a fractured opposition front. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami declared that all 47 AIADMK MLAs would oppose the motion, questioning the fairness of the CM meeting rebels. His stance sparked a commotion, leading the Speaker to invite rebel leader S.P. Velumani to speak, which caused further disruption. Velumani, heading the rebel group, asserted that the AIADMK was actually supporting the trust vote because the majority of people voted for the Chief Minister.
Other parties took varied stances. Pattali Makkal Katchi announced it would abstain, while BJP’s lone MLA, M. Bhojarajan, declared neutrality. Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi leader Thamimun Ansari opposed the motion, specifically criticizing the appointment of astrologer Radhan Pandit, stating, “Astrology can’t be a part of the government. It’s unacceptable.” Similarly, DMDK’s Premallatha Vijayakanth questioned the message behind appointing Pandit and challenged the CM on transparency regarding officials who met him with covered faces.
Conversely, several smaller allies extended their support. The Communist Party of India, Congress Legislature Party, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML all supported the government. VCK member Vanni Arasu demanded laws against superstition like astrology and solutions for fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy. IUML support was confirmed as the vote proceeded. Former Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazhagam MLA S. Kamaraj, recently expelled for “anti-party activities,” also declared his support for CM Vijay.
Chief Minister Vijay responded to the criticisms by asserting that his government would function “with the speed of a horse and not indulge in horse trading.” He assured the house that the administration would be “secular” and that all earlier government schemes, including welfare initiatives, would be continued. Minister Nirmalkumar emphasized that the result reflected public trust, saying, “The people of Tamil Nadu have shown their trust in our leader... People wanted a change in this election, and they voted for the change.”
The conclusion of the trust vote solidifies TVK’s position, but challenges remain. The controversy over astrologer appointments and AIADMK internal divisions may impact policy stability. As the new administration moves forward, maintaining the support of its diverse coalition and addressing opposition demands for transparency will be critical. The continuation of welfare schemes and handling of external pressures, such as NEET irregularities and fishermen arrests, will define the next phase of Tamil Nadu’s political journey.
