A massive search continues in northwestern Tennessee for Craig Berry, a retired special forces veteran, who is wanted for the attempted murder of his wife.
Investigators from multiple agencies are currently scouring the dense woods of northwestern Tennessee for an armed special forces veteran suspected of attempting to kill his wife. The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday that the search for Craig Berry, 53, is ongoing after he fled into the forest near his Dover residence on Friday morning. Sheriff Frankie Gray stated that Berry has been on the run since the incident near the Kentucky border, leaving a trail of law enforcement activity in his wake.
The initial response was swift, but Berry managed to escape into the woods before deputies could arrive on the scene. A trail camera later captured an image believed to show Berry wearing camouflage clothing, indicating his preparation for evasion. Since that image was captured, Berry has not been seen. The sheer difficulty of the operation is amplified by Berry’s background; as a retired special forces veteran, he possesses extensive survival tactics training. This makes him a significantly more challenging target for law enforcement officers navigating the rugged landscape.
Sheriff Gray explained that while the massive search was scaled back from Sunday into Monday due to adverse weather conditions, the focus remains tight on the area near the crime scene. “We’re still focusing on pretty much the same area, but we’re going to expand it a little bit,” Gray told CNN. He emphasized the nature of the current effort, stating, “We’re going to search really, really detailed. Slow and methodical.” This approach is necessary given the terrain and the suspect’s capabilities. The US Army has verified Berry’s military credentials, confirming he served as an Infantryman and Special Forces Medical Sergeant from 1992 to 2016, deploying to Iraq four times before retiring as a sergeant first class.
A warrant has been issued accusing Berry of second-degree attempted murder. Sheriff Gray confirmed Tuesday that his wife has since been released from the hospital, though the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation. The physical profile of the suspect poses a distinct threat to the search teams. “He is an excellent swimmer and diver, and is in good physical shape,” the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook. Furthermore, authorities believe Berry is armed with at least one handgun and has taken extra ammunition, making direct engagement dangerous for any potential pursuers.
Several law enforcement agencies have joined the effort, including the US Marshals Service, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. They are operating in one of the most challenging environments in the region. About 30 miles from Dover lies the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, which is described as one of the largest contiguous blocks of undeveloped forest in the eastern United States. The rough terrain and vastness of this area provide ample cover for a suspect with survival skills.
The manhunt caused immediate disruption in the local community. Early Monday, Stewart County Middle School was placed on a “soft lockdown” as law enforcement activity occurred nearby. The district clarified that all students and staff remained indoors while instruction continued, and no outdoor activities were permitted during the assessment. Mike Craig, the district’s director of schools, assured the public that there was “no direct threat to any school whatsoever,” noting that law enforcement activity took place at least five blocks away. He explained that parents were not notified in advance to avoid impacting their operations, as the school itself was not in danger.
Despite the lack of immediate threat to the school, the intensity of the search evoked memories of past trauma in Stewart County. In 2018, the county was haunted by the case of murder suspect Kirby Wallace, who evaded authorities for a week before being captured. Wallace eventually pleaded guilty to multiple charges including murder, attempted murder, burglary, robbery, kidnapping, and arson. The parallels in the geography and the use of forest cover have drawn comparisons to that high-profile chase, though investigators are treating this case with its own unique protocols.
Investigators are not ruling out the possibility that Berry has received outside assistance since the incident. The sheriff’s office stated they have no information that he is no longer in the area, suggesting he may still be hiding in the surrounding woods. The combination of his military training, physical fitness, and the dense, undeveloped forest makes the task of locating him exceptionally difficult. Search crews must navigate the challenging topography of the region while maintaining a methodical and detailed approach to avoid missing any signs of his presence.
The expanded search efforts indicate that authorities believe there is still a reasonable chance of locating Berry alive or in custody. By slowing down the search pattern and expanding the perimeter slightly, law enforcement is attempting to create a net that captures any movement out of the immediate crime scene. The presence of the US Marshals Service highlights the seriousness of the case and the resources being dedicated to apprehending a suspect with a specialized military background.
The ongoing search for Craig Berry in Tennessee’s dense forest highlights the complexities of apprehending a suspect with elite survival training. As search teams continue their methodical sweep of the Land Between the Lakes area, the likelihood of a quick resolution diminishes due to the terrain. Authorities must balance thoroughness with safety, given Berry’s reported weapons and physical condition. This manhunt will likely continue for days, requiring sustained resources and public vigilance as the investigation moves toward closure.
