Suvendu Adhikari has officially assumed office as the new leader of West Bengal, marking a significant political shift with a newly formed BJP cabinet and record-breaking voter participation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, and Dharmendra Pradhan at the swearing-in ceremony in New Delhi. Dignitaries from neighboring states, including Tripura’s Manik Saha, Assam’s Himanta Biswa Sarma, Delhi’s Rekha Gupta, and Uttarakhand’s Pushkar Dhami, also attended the historic event. This gathering marked the formal establishment of the BJP’s first government in West Bengal following their decisive victory in the recent assembly elections. The presence of such high-profile national and regional leaders underscored the significance of this political transition.
Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister, leading the state into a new era of governance. The BJP’s victory in the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections was monumental, with the party winning 207 seats compared to the Trinamool Congress’s 80 seats, ending the latter’s 15-year rule. The electoral process saw unprecedented engagement from the public, with West Bengal recording its highest-ever voter turnout since independence. Phase II of the elections saw a polling percentage of 91.66%, while Phase I recorded 93.19%, bringing the combined polling percentage to an impressive 92.47%.
The newly formed BJP cabinet includes several key figures who played pivotal roles in the party’s expansion and electoral success. Among the prominent appointees is Dilip Ghosh, a veteran BJP leader and former state party president. Initially an RSS full-time pracharak, Ghosh was instrumental in strengthening the BJP’s grassroots organization in West Bengal after 2014. He previously served as an MP from the Medinipur constituency and remains a central figure in the party’s political strategy in the state.
A notable inclusion in the cabinet is Agnimitra Paul, who serves as the sole woman minister. At 51 years old, Paul was sworn in alongside the Chief Minister. A two-time MLA from Asansol Dakshin and the BJP’s Bengal vice-president, she defeated TMC’s Tapas Banerjee by over 40,000 votes. Before entering politics in 2019, Paul was a distinguished figure in Kolkata’s fashion industry, running her label “Inga” and designing for celebrities like Sridevi and Hema Malini. Her work highlighted Bengal’s traditional crafts, such as Kantha embroidery, and she has studied Botany and fashion technology.
Other ministers bring diverse regional and community representation to the government. Ashok Kirtania, an MLA representing Bangaon Uttar in North 24 Parganas, brings business experience and local organizational knowledge to the administration. Kshudiram Tudu, a tribal leader from Bankura district, represents Ranibandh, a tribal-dominated constituency in the Jungle Mahal region, helping the BJP strengthen its outreach among tribal communities.
Nisith Pramanik adds a youthful dimension to the cabinet as a prominent young leader from North Bengal. Previously associated with the Trinamool Congress, he joined the BJP in 2019 and served as Minister of State for Home Affairs and Youth Affairs and Sports in the Modi government starting in July 2021. At 35, he was one of the youngest ministers, representing the Rajbanshi community and leveraging North Bengal’s strong youth appeal.
The current council of ministers can accommodate up to 44 members, leaving scope for the induction of 39 more ministers in the future. This expansion potential suggests that the new government may broaden its ministerial portfolio to include additional leaders from various constituencies and communities. The induction of these leaders will likely focus on consolidating the party’s gains and addressing regional specificities across the state.
The formation of this new administration signals a definitive shift in West Bengal’s political landscape. With a robust legislative mandate and historic voter engagement, the government is positioned to implement its agenda with significant public backing. The inclusion of leaders like Agnimitra Paul and Dilip Ghosh indicates a strategy to balance traditional party loyalty with emerging grassroots influences. As the cabinet potentially expands, the administration will face the challenge of integrating diverse voices while maintaining cohesive policy execution. The long-term impact will likely depend on how effectively the new leadership addresses developmental needs and maintains the momentum generated by the record-breaking electoral victory.
