Leaders gather as Siddaramaiah prepares to step down, with D.K. Shivakumar poised to take over Karnataka leadership in a major political transition.
The political landscape in Karnataka is undergoing a significant shift as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hosts a breakfast gathering for his cabinet colleagues. This event marks the beginning of a formal transition, with Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar widely expected to succeed him. The move follows directives from the Congress high command, signaling a definitive end to Siddaramaiah’s tenure as the state head.
Supporters of Shivakumar gathered early outside his Bengaluru residence, distributing sweets and raising slogans in anticipation of his elevation. The atmosphere was charged with optimism as party workers expressed confidence in the incoming leadership. Meanwhile, Home Minister G. Parameshwara confirmed that the current Chief Minister convened the breakfast meeting to express gratitude to his colleagues before resigning. This strategic timing aligns with reports that Siddaramaiah will announce his decision shortly after the meeting, paving the way for Shivakumar to assume the Karnataka CM post.
The transition is not merely a change of personnel but a carefully orchestrated political maneuver. Siddaramaiah has been asked by the Congress high command to move to the Rajya Sabha, with a seat offered for the elections scheduled on June 18. This offer serves as a compromise, allowing him to remain within the party hierarchy while clearing the path for Shivakumar. Sources close to the Chief Minister indicate that he is likely to announce his decision on May 28, the day of the breakfast meeting.
However, procedural hurdles remain. Lok Bhavan officials stated that Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has not yet been approached for Siddaramaiah’s resignation. This is complicated by the Governor’s current location in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where he has traveled for personal reasons. Although he is expected to return to Bengaluru soon, potentially in time for the Vice President’s visit on Friday, his absence means the formal acceptance of the resignation is delayed. It is crucial to note that even if a resignation is submitted to the special secretary, the Governor must personally meet the Chief Minister before accepting it.
The tension surrounding the leadership change has been brewing since the government completed its two-and-a-half-year tenure. The Congress government in Karnataka has now completed three years, and the power struggle has dominated public discourse. While the ruling party focuses on internal transitions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seized the opportunity to critique the Congress’s governance. BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra asserted that the high command’s directive was an admission of failure, predicting that Karnataka is headed for mid-term elections regardless of who takes the helm.
The upcoming Rajya Sabha election presents a unique strategic landscape. Congress is expected to win three of the four seats available, with the BJP securing one. Among the retiring Congress leaders is President Mallikarjun Kharge, opening another critical spot. Siddaramaiah’s potential move to the upper house would not only resolve the current leadership stalemate but also strengthen the party’s presence in the national parliament. This maneuver allows the party to manage internal dissent while projecting unity to the public.
In a twist to the immediate power transfer, AICC General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala clarified that no legislature party meeting has been called, and no final decision has been officially taken. He requested the media to refrain from speculation, emphasizing that the process is still unfolding. Surjewala arrived in Bengaluru on Wednesday to meet with Siddaramaiah and other senior leaders, indicating high-level coordination is still active behind the scenes.
The breakfast meeting at the Chief Minister’s official residence in Bengaluru is the focal point of these developments. Attendees include Shivakumar, Cabinet Ministers Santhosh Lad, Priyank Kharge, and Byrathi Suresh, as well as former Bengaluru Mayor R. Sampath Raj. Images shared by the Chief Minister’s Office show Siddaramaiah hugging Shivakumar, and Shivakumar touching Siddaramaiah’s feet in a traditional gesture of respect. These visual cues underscore the cordial nature of the transition, despite the underlying political pressures.
Siddaramaiah’s brief comment to the media on Wednesday, “I will speak tomorrow,” encapsulates the anticipation surrounding his departure. His refusal to entertain questions highlights the sensitivity of the situation. As the political heat rises, all eyes are on the breakfast meeting, where the formal announcement of his future course of action is expected. The party has offered Siddaramaiah a Rajya Sabha seat to facilitate this change, ensuring he remains a key figure in national politics even as he relinquishes state power.
The imminent departure of Siddaramaiah and the anticipated rise of D.K. Shivakumar signify a pivotal moment for the Congress party in Karnataka. This transition, driven by high-command directives and strategic compromises, aims to stabilize internal party dynamics while addressing governance criticisms from the opposition. The delay in Governor Gehlot’s return adds a procedural pause, but the political will for change is undeniable. As the new leadership takes charge, the focus will shift from internal power struggles to effective governance, with the Rajya Sabha seat offering Siddaramaiah a continued role in national politics. The coming days will test the new administration’s ability to deliver on promises and manage the opposition’s intensified scrutiny, potentially setting the stage for early elections if governance issues persist.
