Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent advice on reducing gold purchases and fuel usage.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has launched a pointed critique against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, targeting recent advice given to the public regarding personal spending and resource consumption. On Monday, May 11, Shivakumar addressed members of the press, urging the Prime Minister to clarify who is actually responsible for the escalating costs of essential commodities.
During his press interaction, Shivakumar specifically referenced Modi’s recent counsel to Indians to refrain from purchasing jewelry for the next year and to significantly reduce their fuel consumption. The Deputy Chief Minister questioned the efficacy of such advice without addressing the root causes of inflation. “The Prime Minister, who has advised people not to buy gold and reduce fuel consumption, should also explain why the prices have risen and who is responsible for it,” Shivakumar stated. He argued that offering advice without explaining the underlying economic drivers is insufficient for the common citizen.
Shivakumar further scrutinized the practicality of the Prime Minister’s suggestions, particularly regarding cultural practices. He asked, “Can you ask people celebrating weddings not to buy gold?” He noted that during times of both hardship and happiness, Indians traditionally take loans against gold, making such advice difficult to follow. To illustrate his point about the lack of tangible results from previous government directives, Shivakumar recalled the Prime Minister’s request during the COVID-19 pandemic for people to light lamps and clap. “Did that solve problems?” he asked, implying that symbolic gestures did not alleviate the economic pressures faced by citizens.
The critique extended to recommendations on transportation. Shivakumar challenged the Prime Minister to lead by example before advising the masses to use public transport. “Let him instruct his own Cabinet Ministers in this regard. We must first practise what we preach before sending a message to the common people,” he remarked. Shivakumar outlined a specific order of sacrifice, suggesting that Central Ministers, Union government officials, legislators, leaders, and workers of BJP-governed states should initiate these reductions. “Let the sacrifice first begin with Central Ministers, Union government officials, officials in BJP-governed States, their party legislators, leaders, and workers. Then let them advise others to sacrifice,” he emphasized.
This political exchange highlights a growing tension over economic management and public communication strategies. The Deputy Chief Minister’s comments reflect a broader opposition narrative that holds the central government accountable for market fluctuations. By focusing on the gold price rise, Shivakumar has brought attention to the disparity between political rhetoric and the economic reality experienced by households. The emphasis on fuel consumption and gold purchases underscores the sensitive nature of inflation in Indian politics, where consumer spending habits are closely watched indicators of public sentiment.
The demand for transparency regarding the gold price rise and fuel costs suggests that political scrutiny over inflationary trends will intensify. If the central government fails to provide concrete explanations or policy interventions to stabilize these prices, public trust in economic leadership may erode further. Shivakumar’s insistence that officials practice what they preach indicates that symbolic gestures will no longer suffice for the electorate. Future political discourse is likely to focus heavily on accountability, with opposition parties leveraging consumer pain points to challenge the administration’s economic credibility. Without tangible measures to address the root causes of cost escalation, similar criticisms from regional leaders are expected to persist and amplify.
