Communist Party of India (Marxist) Secretary P. Shanmugam declares there is no moral objection if the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi chooses to join the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam-led administration.
CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam clarified on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, that there is no fundamental objection if the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) decides to join the government led by Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) leader C. Joseph Vijay. Speaking after participating in a demonstration in Chennai organized by Left parties to protest against the hike in petroleum product prices, Shanmugam stated that political decisions regarding coalition dynamics are internal matters for each party. He expressed openness to the possibility, noting that if the VCK leadership perceives an opportunity to be availed, the CPI(M) respects that autonomy.
Shanmugam emphasized that while the CPI(M), Communist Party of India (CPI), and the VCK had collectively decided to support the TVK government from outside, any change in this stance, such as VCK joining the cabinet, rests solely with the VCK’s own leadership. He expressed a hope that such significant decisions would be discussed with allied partners, but firmly asserted that there was no need for the VCK to strictly adhere to the Left line on this specific issue. However, he drew a clear red line regarding the composition of the cabinet, stating that the Left parties would reconsider their support if the government chose to include All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) legislators in the Cabinet.
CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian echoed the sentiment of maintaining the existing support structure, reaffirming that the three parties had taken the same stand of supporting the TVK government from outside. Veerapandian argued that this external support was sufficient for the stability of the Tamil Nadu government and that there was no need for the administration to entertain thoughts of bringing in other partners, specifically hinting at the AIADMK. He urged the Chief Minister to ponder over this suggestion, highlighting the importance of respecting the verdict of the people, avoiding another election, and, above all, avoiding the imposition of President’s Rule.
Both leaders used the platform to criticize the economic policies of the central government, particularly the recent hike in petroleum product prices. They warned that this hike would have a direct bearing on the cost of essential commodities and would lead to the sale of gas cylinders at prices significantly above the market rate. Shanmugam pointed out the hypocrisy in the current administration, noting that the Prime Minister had advised people to avoid travel, yet the ruling class and corporates were not ready to adopt austerity measures. Instead, Veerapandian noted that ordinary people were expected to follow these restrictions while the wealthy and the ruling class continued their lifestyles unaffected.
The potential for the VCK to join the TVK-led government introduces a significant variable in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, as noted by the conditional nature of the Left parties' current support. If the VCK proceeds with joining the cabinet, it may force the CPI(M) and CPI to formally withdraw their external support, particularly if the AIADMK is also included, which Shanmugam explicitly warned against. This shift could destabilize the current administration, potentially leading to the scenario Veerapandian cautioned against: the imposition of President’s Rule or the necessity of fresh elections. Furthermore, the continued discontent over fuel prices and the perceived lack of austerity among the elite suggests that public sentiment may remain volatile. The Left parties’ willingness to protest and their clear stance on economic inequality indicate that future governance will face intense scrutiny on both coalition integrity and economic policy, potentially limiting the TVK government's legislative flexibility and increasing pressure to address the rising cost of living for the general populace.
