A rebel faction of the AIADMK, led by C.Ve. Shanmugam, has formally thrown its weight behind the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government, marking a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape following recent assembly verdicts.
On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, a significant realignment in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape occurred as a rebel group within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) declared its unwavering support for the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. This strategic move, announced by former Ministers C.Ve. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani, signals a deepening fracture within the opposition camp just days after the Assembly election verdict. The decision was made in direct response to perceived betrayals by the party’s leadership, fundamentally altering the current political balance in the state.
The declaration was made public during a press interaction in the presence of key colleagues, including S.P. Velumani, C. Vijayabhaskar, and R. Kamaraj. Mr. Shanmugam, serving as the former Law Minister, framed this political shift not merely as a tactical adjustment but as a moral imperative to preserve the ideological integrity of the party. He accused AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) of attempting to form a government with the support of the party’s traditional adversary, the DMK. “This was a shock to us,” Mr. Shanmugam stated, highlighting the emotional and ideological weight of the decision for the rebel faction.
The core of the dispute lies in the historical context of the AIADMK’s existence. Mr. Shanmugam emphasized that the party was established specifically to oppose the DMK and had practiced politics primarily on this plank for decades. Any move to collaborate with its rival would render “the party’s disappearance,” as he observed, suggesting that such an alliance would erase the fundamental identity of the organization. This ideological clash has led the rebel group to sever ties with the central leadership’s current strategies, opting instead to align with the newly formed TVK, which has emerged as a major force following the recent electoral results.
Mr. Shanmugam and Mr. Velumani argued that the reasons for the party’s back-to-back electoral setbacks must be thoroughly analyzed. They pointed out that the AIADMK should have won the 2021 and 2026 Assembly elections, as well as the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, but failed to do so. These repeated losses have fueled internal dissent, leading the rebel group to take decisive action. “We have requested the general secretary to convene a meeting of the general council as early as possible,” the former Law Minister observed, indicating their intent to challenge the leadership through formal party mechanisms rather than just public declarations.
In a move to clarify their standing, Mr. Shanmugam added that “we are no longer in any pre-poll alliance.” This statement effectively isolates the rebel faction from any existing political coalitions that might have supported the central leadership’s stance. By aligning with the TVK, they are establishing a new political baseline, one that prioritizes ideological consistency over pragmatic alliances that they view as compromising the party’s core values. This development suggests a fragmented opposition front, where the traditional binary of AIADMK versus DMK is being complicated by the rise of the TVK and internal splintering.
Addressing the media, Mr. Velumani requested that the press not spread rumors that his group was seeking to create a split in the party. “Elders of many of us were with the party since the launch of the organisation,” he pointed out, emphasizing the long-standing loyalty and legacy of the members involved. This appeal to legacy serves to legitimize their actions as a defense of the party’s original principles rather than a cynical power grab. Despite these claims, the political reality suggests a de facto split, with significant portions of the party’s legislative wing backing the new direction.
After addressing the media, the AIADMK MLAs associated with the rebel group left for Fort St. George to attend the Assembly sitting. This physical move to the legislative complex indicates their intention to actively participate in the new government’s operations, reinforcing their support for the TVK. Their presence in the Assembly as a distinct bloc will likely influence legislative dynamics, voting patterns, and the overall stability of the new administration. It remains to be seen how the central AIADMK leadership will respond to this open defiance, but the current situation reflects a crisis of confidence within the traditional opposition structure.
It is believed that of the total of 47 legislators of the AIADMK, 30 MLAs are with the group led by Mr. Shanmugam and Mr. Velumani. This numerical advantage within the party’s legislative wing gives the rebel group substantial leverage. The scale of this defection, if confirmed, would represent one of the most significant internal upheavals in the party’s recent history. The leadership of the rebel group includes Mr. Velumani as leader of the AIADMK legislature party, G. Hari as deputy leader, Dr. Vijayabhaskar as whip, and Mr. Kamaraj as secretary, creating a parallel administrative structure that challenges the authority of the general secretary.
The alignment of C.Ve. Shanmugam’s rebel faction with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government indicates a permanent shift in the state’s political ecology. By citing Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s alleged overtures to the DMK as the catalyst, the faction has justified its break as a defense of ideological purity. If the estimated 30 MLAs remain with this group, the AIADMK may face existential challenges, potentially leading to a reconfiguration of power where the TVK becomes the dominant opposition force. Long-term impacts could include a weakened traditional opposition, increased political instability, and a redefined political identity for Tamil Nadu’s electorate.
