Thousands gathered to honor the bravery of Amin Abdullah and two other victims who died protecting the Islamic Center of San Diego from a deadly shooting.
In a powerful display of unity and grief, more than 2,000 people gathered in a San Diego park on Thursday to mourn the loss of three men who lost their lives during the recent San Diego Mosque attack. The solemn ceremony honored Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad, who were murdered while attempting to stop the violence at the city’s largest mosque.
Mourners, including uniformed police officers, stood in organized rows for the Islamic funeral prayer, known as Janazah, beneath a white canopy. The atmosphere was heavy with emotion as attendees chanted “God is the greatest” in Arabic, raising their hands in prayer. The bodies of the three victims, aged 51, 78, and 57 respectively, lay beneath cloth during the service. They are scheduled to be buried side by side later in the day at a nearby cemetery.
The three men are being widely remembered for their heroic actions in delaying and distracting the two teenage suspects who opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday. The attack occurred during school hours, targeting a facility that houses a primary school with 140 students.
Police have indicated that the victims’ quick actions likely prevented further bloodshed. The shooting began at approximately 11:43 am Pacific Time when Amin Abdullah, the center’s security guard, engaged in a gun battle with the teenage assailants. Abdullah used his radio to order a lockdown at the mosque, buying critical time for children and staff to hide in classrooms and closets.
Nadir Awad, whose wife is a teacher at the center, and Mansour Kaziha, the center’s handyman and cook, lived near the mosque and ran toward the gunfire to help. All three men succumbed to their injuries. The assailants later fled the scene in a vehicle and were found dead from self-inflicted gunshots.
Taha Hassane, the imam of the center, emphasized the resilience of the community during a difficult time. “Today is a message to everyone: Our community got hurt, but our community is standing strong and firm,” Hassane stated. He noted that people had traveled from across the United States, including from the East Coast, to attend the ceremony.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl addressed the media shortly after the shooting, stating, “We are considering this a hate crime until it’s not.” The investigation is currently ongoing as a targeted attack.
For the families of the victims, the legacy of bravery is a source of strength. Khaled Abdullah, the son of the security guard, told Reuters, “The fact that he was on the front line, trying to defend kids and innocent people, that makes me feel good. Calling him a hero is the least we can do.”
Another mourner, who requested anonymity, broke down in tears while discussing the impact of the violence. “Today is just a really difficult day for our entire community,” she said, reflecting the widespread anxiety felt by Muslims across the U.S. amid rising Islamophobia. The attack has left the community on edge, yet the massive turnout for the funeral serves as a testament to their collective resolve.
The San Diego Mosque attack has inflicted deep wounds on the local Muslim community, yet the overwhelming support displayed during the mourning ceremonies suggests a strong foundation for recovery. The identification of the incident as a hate crime underscores the severity of the threat faced by religious institutions. As the victims are laid to rest, the community’s demonstrated unity and the acknowledgment of their sacrifice by law enforcement and the public will likely influence future security measures and interfaith relations. The events highlight the critical role of individual bravery in protecting vulnerable populations and may spur increased advocacy for hate crime legislation and community safety initiatives nationwide.
