Samarth Singh has been brought to Bhopal for questioning following the arrest linked to the tragic death of his wife, Twisha Sharma, in a case involving allegations of harassment.
Samarth Singh, the husband of Twisha Sharma who was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal, has been arrested by Madhya Pradesh police and brought to the city for further questioning. Officials confirmed that Singh was transported to the Katara Hills police station in the early hours of Saturday, May 23, 2026, after remaining absconding for several days regarding allegations of a dowry death and harassment.
The arrest marks a significant development in the case, which began with Sharma’s discovery at her home on the night of May 12. Singh, who is the son of former judge and Bhopal Consumer Court chairperson Giribala Singh, had withdrawn his anticipatory bail application from the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Friday and surrendered at the Jabalpur district court. He was arrested outside the court premises before being transported to Bhopal.
Bhopal Commissioner of Police Sanjay Kumar stated that Singh will be produced before the court on Saturday, with the police intending to seek custodial remand for interrogation. "He will be produced before the court today, and police will seek his remand for interrogation," Commissioner Kumar told PTI. The transportation involved police vehicles carrying Singh, his legal counsel, and members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Misrod ACP Rajnish Kashyap.
Concurrently, the political and legal landscape of the case has expanded. On Friday, the Madhya Pradesh State government recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. This recommendation comes just two days after Chief Minister Mohan Yadav met with Sharma’s family, signaling a high-level governmental interest in ensuring a thorough investigation. Despite the recommendation for a central probe, Commissioner Kumar clarified that local police will continue their investigation until the central agency formally takes over the case.
Mr. Singh, a lawyer by profession, had been on the run for more than a week after a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against him and his mother. His arrest follows a series of legal maneuvers, including the withdrawal of his anticipatory bail plea. The case stems from the death of Sharma, 33, who married Singh on December 25 of the previous year. Her family has leveled serious allegations against both Singh and his mother, citing mental harassment and relentless financial demands as key factors leading to her death.
The timeline of events shows rapid developments. After Singh appeared at the Jabalpur district court to surrender, the Madhya Pradesh High Court issued a notice regarding pleas seeking the cancellation of anticipatory bail for Giribala Singh. The court sought her response by May 25. Prior to this, Bhopal Police had issued a third and final notice to Giribala Singh after she allegedly failed to appear for the recording of her statement.
Giribala Singh has contested the narrative that she is evading police, stating that Bhopal Police have not reached out to her directly despite sending a final notice. She expressed willingness to record her statement but cited a chaotic environment outside her residence as a barrier. "I cannot venture out of my home. Yesterday, a car hit my advocate. I cannot step out at all due to the situation outside," Giribala Singh told reporters, referring to the intense media presence.
She added, "I have been reaching out to them (police). I have sent an email to the commissioner of police," asserting that she had attempted to contact authorities. She noted that police had previously indicated they would come to her residence, but direct contact had not been established. Commissioner Kumar acknowledged this discrepancy, noting that officers were occupied with proceedings at the Jabalpur High Court on Friday. He assured that her statement would be recorded as soon as possible.
Legal experts have pointed out that statements from women can be recorded at their residences, providing a procedural avenue for Giribala Singh’s situation to be resolved without her needing to leave her home. However, the current standoff highlights the complexities of managing high-profile cases with significant public and media scrutiny. The arrival of Singh in Bhopal brings immediate pressure for the police to address these legal and logistical hurdles while preparing for the CBI’s potential involvement.
The arrest of Samarth Singh and the subsequent recommendation for a CBI probe underscore the gravity of the dowry death allegations surrounding the case of Twisha Sharma. As the investigation shifts from local law enforcement to potentially the central agency, the focus remains on the credibility of the harassment claims made by Sharma’s family. The legal battle involving Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail and the logistics of recording statements in a media-saturated environment will likely set precedents for how similar high-profile domestic violence cases are handled in India. The outcome of Singh’s remand and the eventual CBI investigation will determine whether systemic pressures on women in marital disputes are adequately addressed by the justice system, potentially influencing future legislative attention to dowry harassment laws.
