A significant rift widens in the AIADMK as rebel leaders pledge support to the ruling TVK ahead of the crucial confidence vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Ahead of the critical floor test scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay strengthened his position in the legislative battleground. On Tuesday, May 12, the Chief Minister met with rebel AIADMK leaders, including former ministers S.P. Velumani and C.Ve. Shanmugam, shortly after they announced their support for his ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. This strategic outreach comes just hours after the rebels declared Velumani as their Legislature Party leader, directly challenging the authority of the party’s general secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
The political maneuvering intensified within the Assembly chamber itself. Newly elected Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar allowed Mr. Velumani to speak immediately after Mr. Palaniswami delivered a brief speech congratulating him on his election. This procedural allowance highlighted the deep schism within the party. While the morning saw the rebels formally declare Velumani as their leader, Palaniswami’s supporters maintained that he remained the legitimate head, with senior leader O.S. Manian confirming that the Palaniswami-led faction would vote against the confidence motion moved by the TVK government.
The conflict centers on the legitimate leadership of the AIADMK following its recent electoral setbacks. Mr. Shanmugam, one of the prominent rebels, accused Mr. Palaniswami of attempting to form a government with support from the arch-rival DMK after the fractured mandate. Speaking to journalists, Mr. Shanmugam described this alleged move as a shock, emphasizing that the party was founded to oppose the DMK and had revolved around this stance for 53 years. He argued that any collaboration with the rival would lead to the "party’s disappearance," thus justifying their decision to extend support to the TVK.
Mr. Shanmugam and Mr. Velumani stated that the reasons behind the party’s consecutive electoral losses must be analyzed. They have requested Mr. Palaniswami to convene a general council meeting as soon as possible. Mr. Shanmugam clarified that they are no longer part of any pre-poll alliance, signaling a decisive break from previous strategies. Addressing rumors of a party split, Mr. Velumani asked the media not to spread misinformation. He highlighted that many elders in their group have been with the party since its inception, asserting that this was not a new faction but a return to foundational principles.
The rebel group has constituted its own administrative structure. G. Hari, the Tiruttani MLA, was elected as the deputy leader, while C. Vijayabhaskar, a former minister, serves as the whip. Kamaraj was appointed as the secretary of this rebel faction. This organizational step underscores their intent to operate as a distinct legislative block during the upcoming confidence vote.
Conversely, the camp of Edappadi K. Palaniswami has vigorously defended its unity. Senior leader O.S. Manian accused Mr. Shanmugam of spreading false information and attempting to lure MLAs with promises of ministerial positions. Mr. Manian claimed that all 47 AIADMK legislators had signed a letter electing Mr. Palaniswami as the Legislature Party leader. He stated that currently, 26 members support Palaniswami, contradicting media reports that suggested the rebels held 30 seats and Palaniswami’s camp had only 17. "The signatures of all members supporting Mr. Palaniswami proves the AIADMK remains united," Manian asserted.
Manian also pointed to the party's achievements, noting that challenges were overcome under Palaniswami’s leadership, including the reclamation of the ‘Two Leaves’ symbol, which had been frozen after the split following Jayalalithaa’s death. He highlighted that the NDA secured nearly 1.34 crore votes in the election. Dismissing Shanmugam’s claim of alliance talks with the DMK as "entirely baseless," Manian alleged that the rebels were driven by a desire to become Ministers or hold powerful positions.
Agri S.S. Krishnamurthy, appointed whip by Mr. Palaniswami, issued a strict directive to all members. "As per the directions of the general secretary, we will vote against the Motion of Confidence. All members have been informed. Legal action will be initiated against anyone who cross-votes," he declared. This warning signals a hardline approach from Palaniswami’s camp to maintain discipline.
In the afternoon of May 12, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay continued his outreach, visiting Mr. Shanmugam’s residence in Chennai. This marked his second consecutive day of engagement with various political leaders, aiming to secure the necessary numbers for the confidence motion. The Speaker acknowledged receiving separate representations from both sides regarding the election of the Legislature Party leader, indicating the procedural complexity ahead.
The coming 24 hours will determine the fate of the TVK government and the structural integrity of the AIADMK. The diverging claims of strength-26 loyalists for Palaniswami versus the rebel assertion of a majority-create a precarious political environment. If the rebels maintain their unity and secure the support of independent members, the TVK government will survive, potentially dealing a fatal blow to Palaniswami’s faction. Conversely, if the disciplined vote of the 47 signatories holds, the confidence motion could fail, triggering fresh elections. The outcome will likely redefine the leadership dynamics of Tamil Nadu politics for years, with the legitimacy of both Vijay’s government and Palaniswami’s command hanging in the balance as the Speaker prepares to count the votes.
