Raj Singh’s mother firmly rejects police theories in the Chandranath Rath murder case, presenting an alibi placing her son at a wedding in Lucknow on the day of the incident.
In the ongoing investigation into the Chandranath Rath murder, Jamvanti Singh, the mother of the arrested Ballia resident and alleged sharpshooter Raj Singh, has publicly rejected the police’s narrative. She maintains that her son was not present at the ambush site in Madhyamgram on May 6 but was instead with family members in Lucknow and Ayodhya. This claim directly challenges the authorities' theory regarding the timeline and location of the alleged gunman.
Jamvanti Singh provided a detailed account to journalists at her home, stating that Raj Singh had traveled with her to Lucknow on May 7 to attend the wedding of the daughter of a local MLC, identified as Pappu Singh. She described a group comprising Raj Singh, a driver, one of his friends, another acquaintance, and herself. According to Jamvanti, the group stayed at a guest house near the wedding venue in Lucknow. “Raj attended the wedding and returned around midnight. We slept there and the next morning got ready to leave for Ambedkar Nagar,” she stated, outlining her timeline for where her son supposedly was during the critical hours of the crime.
Her alibi extends beyond the wedding weekend. Jamvanti alleged that after leaving Lucknow, the family visited the shrine of Makhdoom Ashraf Baba in Ambedkar Nagar, where they offered a ceremonial chadar. She insisted that local people at the shrine knew Raj Singh and could verify their visit, providing potential eyewitness support for her claim. From there, the family reportedly traveled to Ayodhya for darshan. “We completed the darshan and later stopped to eat because the we all were hungry,” she said. She added that police officials intercepted their vehicle while they were leaving the area, leading to their detention.
According to Jamvanti, the detention began when she and her family were stopped in Ayodhya. She claimed that Raj Singh was taken away by police personnel while she was kept overnight at a women’s police station. “I did not know what had happened to my son. The next morning, around 11 or 12, I was briefly allowed to meet him,” she alleged. She further claimed that officials informed her that a Kolkata police team had arrived to take Raj Singh away by flight for questioning in connection with the case. “They said it was only for interrogation and that he would be released later, but since then we have had no information about where exactly he is,” she alleged, expressing concern over the lack of updates on her son’s whereabouts.
Maintaining her son’s innocence, Jamvanti claimed that Raj Singh had remained with the family between May 1 and May 9 and had not traveled elsewhere. To substantiate her claims, she pointed to digital evidence, stating, “We have cameras at home. We went shopping in the city and bought items. Everything can be checked.” She also alleged that Raj Singh attended wedding functions on May 7 and 8 before being detained on May 9 and allegedly taken away the following day. This timeline places him in Uttar Pradesh, far from the North 24 Parganas location where Chandranath Rath was ambushed.
The murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, has triggered a high-profile inquiry. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising seven members has been formed by the CBI to probe the death. The case has drawn significant political attention in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, with allegations and counter-allegations flying between political circles. The arrest of Raj Singh, a resident of Ballia, was a pivotal moment in the investigation, leading to intense scrutiny of the police’s methods and the evidence presented.
Jamvanti Singh’s public statement adds a new layer of complexity to the probe. By asserting that her son was in Lucknow and Ayodhya during the time of the murder, she undermines the prosecution’s reliance on his alleged presence at the crime scene. The reference to CCTV footage and shrine visitors suggests a strategy to build a robust alibi through documentary and eyewitness testimony. However, the family’s subsequent interception and Raj Singh’s transfer to Kolkata police custody remain points of contention.
Jamvanti broke down repeatedly during her interaction with journalists, appealing to authorities and the central government for justice. “My son has done nothing wrong. Please conduct a proper investigation and find out the truth,” she said, highlighting the emotional toll on the family and the perceived urgency for an impartial review of the case. Her claims emphasize the need for transparent verification of the alleged sharpshooter’s movements during the critical dates in question.
The rejection of police theories by Raj Singh’s mother in the Raj Singh case underscores the fragile nature of evidence in high-stakes political murders. As the CBI continues its probe into the death of Chandranath Rath, the conflict between the family’s alibi and official narratives may lead to stricter judicial scrutiny of investigative timelines. This dynamic could result in a prolonged legal process, emphasizing the need for irrefutable digital and physical evidence to secure convictions or dismissals in politically charged environments.
