Amid the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026, Rahul Gandhi accuses the BJP of rewarding officials linked to examination irregularities, sparking political outrage.
Hours after the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 due to severe security breaches, political tensions escalated sharply. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a direct assault on the Centre, alleging that the government protects officials linked to examination controversies rather than addressing systemic failures. Gandhi argued that the state is complicit in what he termed the "theft" of student futures, demanding public scrutiny of officials who have previously overseen such irregularities.
The cancellation of the May 3 examination triggered immediate outrage among the 2.4 million aspirants affected. In response, Gandhi utilized his platform on X to draw parallels between the current crisis and the NEET-UG 2024 controversy. He instructed young voters to investigate the current status of the former NTA DG who was in charge during the previous scandal. Gandhi claimed that the ruling party rewards those who compromise the integrity of national exams, pointing to the career trajectory of former officials as evidence of this alleged pattern.
Gandhi’s comments specifically targeted former NTA Director General Subodh Kumar Singh, who was removed from his post in June 2024 amid criticism over the handling of NEET-UG and UGC-NET examinations. After being placed on compulsory wait, Singh was appointed Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Union Ministry of Steel before being repatriated to his parent Chhattisgarh cadre. He currently serves as Principal Secretary to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. Gandhi urged students to search for Singh’s current posting, implying that his continued rise in government ranks signaled official protection.
"I want to bring a serious matter to the attention of the country's youth," Gandhi wrote on X. "Do one thing-search it yourself on Google: ‘Who was the DG of NTA during the horrific NEET 2024 scam, and where has the Modi government seated him today?’" He followed this by asserting that the BJP rewards those who "toy with the futures of millions of hardworking students like you in this very way." The Congress leader alleged that the government not only protects these officials but promotes them to higher positions, creating a system where "the bigger the theft, the bigger the reward."
The political fallout intensified as Gandhi described the current situation as an "auction" where examination questions were circulated on WhatsApp. He claimed that the futures of over 22 lakh students had been compromised, a figure slightly higher than the 2.4 million candidates affected by the latest cancellation. His remarks echoed earlier concerns raised by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who questioned how repeated examination irregularities continued despite stricter anti-paper leak laws passed by Parliament. The opposition’s narrative frames the NTA paper leak not as an isolated incident, but as a systemic failure protected by the ruling party.
On the day of the controversy, the NTA officially announced that the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3 would be scrapped. The agency cited inputs from central agencies and law-enforcement authorities regarding alleged question paper leaks and the circulation of examination material before the test. The NTA stated that the available material did not permit the continuation of the existing examination process "without compromising the standards of fairness and public confidence that govern national examinations."
Investigations in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and other states reportedly pointed to the circulation of question sets prior to the examination. Investigators are currently examining allegations that portions of those circulated materials substantially matched the actual NEET-UG 2026 paper. In light of these findings, the government has decided to hand over the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive probe. This move signifies a shift from internal NTA procedures to federal law enforcement oversight.
Despite the mounting pressure and the widespread disruption to medical aspirants, the BJP had not officially responded to Rahul Gandhi’s latest allegations at the time of reporting. The opposition’s focus on the career paths of former NTA officials highlights a deepening rift regarding accountability in national examinations. The cancellation represents a significant administrative setback, forcing a re-evaluation of security protocols for one of India’s most critical competitive exams.
The cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination will likely result in a prolonged period of uncertainty for the 2.4 million candidates involved. With the CBI now tasked with investigating the alleged leaks, the timeline for a fresh exam will depend on the speed of the inquiry and the subsequent logistical arrangements by the NTA. The political controversy surrounding the protection of former NTA officials may also lead to stricter parliamentary scrutiny of the agency's future operations. For the students, this delay compounds the stress of competitive preparation, reinforcing concerns about the stability and integrity of the national testing framework. The resolution will depend on both the transparency of the CBI probe and the administrative efficiency of the re-exam process.
