TVK Health Minister K.G. Arunraj asserts politician Vijay surpasses actor Vijay, attributing electoral success to ideology and charismatic leadership in Tamil Nadu.
Dr. K.G. Arunraj, the Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare in the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, has made a striking declaration regarding the party's recent political ascent. Speaking at The Hindu Huddle 2026 during a session titled “New Mandate for Change - A Gen Z Aspiration Story,” Arunraj stated that politician Vijay is more powerful than actor Vijay. He argued that this shift was not accidental but the result of a strategic combination of charisma and ideology that transformed the party into a dominant political force.
Reflecting on the TVK’s sweeping victory in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the minister discussed the party’s strategy, ideological foundation, and future course. He traced his own connection to media through his UPSC preparation days, noting how The Hindu was a essential tool for civil services aspirants. While posted as a medical officer in Krishnagiri, he sourced the newspaper from Hosur due to its unavailability locally, highlighting the publication’s widespread influence even before his political career took shape.
Arunraj emphasized that the electoral success was built on two pillars: the charismatic leadership of Vijay and TVK’s ideological grounding. He rejected the notion that the victory was a fluke or merely a result of fan devotion, stating that the party had evolved from a budding outfit into a primary force in the state. "Tamil Nadu has been ruled by two well-established parties for the last 60 years, and then a fresher takes on both parties and unseats them," he noted, describing the entry of their leader into politics as a bold step that moved TVK beyond a mere fan base.
The minister highlighted that internal assessments had consistently indicated strong support for their leader, particularly in urban areas, suggesting that the people of Tamil Nadu were waiting for a truly universal leader. He described the defeat of the DMK as significant because it lost both power and the support of its allies, calling the mandate, even if one seat short of a majority, the "best mandate we can imagine" for a secular and ideological alliance that never won without allies before.
Addressing speculation about relationships with other major political entities, Arunraj firmly dismissed allegations of an understanding with the BJP. He recalled that in the party's very first conference, their leader stated that while DMK is their political rival, the BJP is their ideological rival. He laughed at the suggestion of an understanding with the BJP, emphasizing that no party had previously dared to take on both the ruling state government and the Union government simultaneously.
On the demographic aspects of the victory, Arunraj clarified that while Gen Z supporters were at the forefront, the success was a "family revolution" rather than just a youth movement. He pointed to the 30 years of grassroots work by Vijay Makkal Iyakkam as the foundation that prevented the party from starting from zero. Strategic decisions, such as the party name and flag design, were deliberate moves, including the inclusion of "Kazhagam" to challenge prevailing norms.
Regarding the tragic Karur stampede, the minister expressed that the incident had shattered their leader, viewing the victims as part of his family. Although the leader wished to return to meet affected families, security concerns prevented it. Arunraj noted that the case is with the CBI and the report is pending.
Defining the "change" promised by the party, Arunraj argued that while ideologies of DMK and TVK may not differ greatly, the ability to adhere to stated principles is the key difference. He accused the DMK of failing to live up to its ideological commitments under Stalin’s tenure. Regarding the government’s style, such as the Chief Minister wearing a suit, he insisted that performance matters more than appearance, calling it a refreshing change.
The declaration that politician Vijay holds greater power than his cinematic persona signals a profound transformation in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. By prioritizing ideological grounding and grassroots connections over mere star power, the TVK government aims to establish a durable political identity distinct from traditional dynastic or celebrity-driven models. This shift suggests a long-term trend where political legitimacy in the state will be increasingly judged by policy adherence and ideological consistency rather than charisma alone. As the CBI investigation into the Karur incident proceeds, the government’s handling of such crises will further test this new model of governance, potentially influencing voter behavior and alliance dynamics in future legislative and national elections.
