TVK Minister Dr. K.G. Arunraj declares that the political Vijay has surpassed his cinematic persona, attributing the party's electoral triumph to a potent blend of ideological grounding and charismatic leadership.
In a significant statement regarding the recent political shift in Tamil Nadu, Dr. K.G. Arunraj, the Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare in the TVK government, declared that the politician Vijay is now more powerful than the actor Vijay. This assertion was made during The Hindu Huddle 2026, specifically within the session titled “New Mandate for Change - A Gen Z Aspiration Story,” where Arunraj reflected on the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s sweeping victory in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Speaking to an audience that included civil services aspirants, Arunraj drew upon his personal connection with the publication, recalling his UPSC preparation days when he sourced the newspaper from Hosur while posted in Krishnagiri. However, the core of his address focused on the mechanics of TVK’s rise from a budding outfit to a primary political force in the state. He emphasized that this achievement was not a fluke but rather the result of the courage of their political leader. According to the minister, the party’s strong foundation rests on two primary pillars: the charismatic leadership of their leader and the party’s deep ideological grounding.
Arunraj argued that Tamil Nadu had been ruled by two well-established parties for the last 60 years. The emergence of a fresher who unseated both established entities was a historic shift. He posited that the people of Tamil Nadu had been waiting for a truly universal leader, a need that internal assessments had consistently indicated was met, particularly in urban areas. The minister described the party as being beyond a mere fan base, suggesting that the electoral mandate was a deliberate choice by the electorate to reject the status quo.
He characterized the defeat of the DMK as particularly significant. Beyond the loss of power, Arunraj noted that the DMK also lost the support of its allies, which he described as a truly secular and ideological alliance. He pointed out that the DMK had never won an election without such alliances. Consequently, even though the TVK’s victory was one seat short of a clear majority, Arunraj described it as the best mandate imaginable, reflecting the infinite wisdom of the Tamil Nadu electorate.
The minister also addressed rumors regarding TVK’s relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Denying any understanding, Arunraj reiterated that at the party’s very first conference, their leader had stated that while the DMK is their political rival, the BJP is their ideological rival. He expressed disdain for the idea that TVK had any alignment with the Union government, noting that no party had previously dared to take on both the ruling state government and the Union government simultaneously. He laughed at the suggestion that they had an understanding with the BJP, framing it as a laughable misconception.
On the role of younger voters, Arunraj clarified that while Gen Z supporters were at the forefront of the campaign, the success was not solely a youth movement. He described it as a “family revolution,” where people of Tamil Nadu engaged with TVK through family units. He highlighted that the leader was emotionally connected to each family and that the party’s social media presence was largely organic and decentralized.
Furthermore, Arunraj emphasized that the success was built on decades of grassroots work. He cited the 30 years of work at the ground level by the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam as crucial evidence that they did not start from zero. He detailed the strategic thinking behind every aspect of the party’s creation, including the name, the flag, and the basic tenets. For instance, he noted that when the BJP argued against the use of the word “Kazhagam,” TVK deliberately included it in their party name, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, as a strategic political statement.
Addressing the tragic stampede in Karur that occurred during a TVK rally, Arunraj confirmed that the case is currently with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the report is yet to be released. However, he emphasized the emotional toll on their leader, stating that the incident shattered Vijay. He explained that the victims were not just voters but part of his family, and while the leader wanted to return to Karur to meet affected families, he was advised against it due to security concerns.
When asked to define the “change” promised by the new government, Arunraj suggested there was both continuity and change. He admitted that if one compares the ideologies of the DMK and TVK, there would not be a great difference. However, he argued that the key difference lies in the ability and capacity to adhere to stated principles. He accused the DMK of failing to live up to its own ideological commitments under Stalin’s tenure.
Regarding the distinctive style of the new government, including Chief Minister Vijay wearing a suit in the Assembly, Arunraj stated that performance matters more than appearance. He described this as a refreshing change, noting that while people comment on the looks, ultimately, performance is what matters.
On relations with the Union government, Arunraj addressed the concept of a “double-engine sarkar.” He argued that this concept is antithetical to the spirit of federalism. He explained that every state is, in a sense, a double-engine government because India functions under a federal constitutional framework. He affirmed that while there are differences, they can work with the Union government while firmly safeguarding the interests of the State.
The electoral victory described by Dr. K.G. Arunraj marks a definitive break from the sixty-year dominance of previous regional parties in Tamil Nadu. By combining charismatic leadership with a distinct ideological stance and leveraging extensive grassroots networks, the TVK has established a new political reality. The emphasis on family-oriented engagement and strategic branding suggests a governance model that prioritizes operational discipline over traditional partisan rhetoric. As the investigation into the Karur incident proceeds, the focus will likely remain on how the government balances its ideological rivals while maintaining federal cooperation. The long-term impact will be determined by the TVK’s ability to deliver on its promise of adhering strictly to its stated principles, potentially reshaping political alliances and voter expectations across South India.
