Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced the first leg of his comprehensive five-nation diplomatic tour upon his arrival in the United Arab Emirates on Friday. His aircraft entered Emirati airspace accompanied by a ceremonial escort from UAE F-16 fighter jets, signaling the high importance placed on this diplomatic engagement. Upon landing in Abu Dhabi, the Prime Minister was accorded a formal guard of honour, underscoring the respectful and robust nature of the bilateral relationship.
This arrival marks the beginning of a crucial phase in India’s foreign policy objectives, with discussions immediately scheduled with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The agenda for these high-level engagements is extensive, covering critical areas such as bilateral cooperation in energy, trade, investment, and broader regional developments. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the dialogue will also address issues of mutual international interest, reflecting the deepening strategic alignment between the two nations. The visit is part of a broader itinerary spanning from May 15 to May 20, which includes stops in the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy, all aimed at strengthening India’s partnerships in trade, technology, clean energy, innovation, and green growth.
Ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) characterized the tour as taking place at a “crucial juncture” for India’s strategic and economic ties with both Europe and the Gulf region. S. C. Ralhan, President of the FIEO, emphasized that the Prime Minister's high-level engagements with the leadership of the UAE and major European nations underscore India's growing stature as a trusted economic partner. He noted that the visit is a key driver of global growth and is expected to create substantial opportunities for Indian exporters. These opportunities span diverse sectors, including engineering, clean energy, technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, textiles, logistics, and digital trade.
The UAE continues to serve as a pivotal gateway for Indian exports to West Asia and Africa, maintaining its status as one of India’s most significant trade and investment partners. This strategic geography enhances the relevance of the discussions taking place in Abu Dhabi. Reem Al Hashimy, the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, expressed warm sentiments towards the visit, describing the Prime Minister as a “true treasure” for the leadership and people of the Emirates. In her remarks to ANI, Al Hashimy stated that the India-UAE relationship is set to scale “new mountaintops” in trade and technology. She highlighted that this visit would continue the momentum generated by recent high-level exchanges between the two countries, further cementing their diplomatic and economic bonds.
Following the conclusion of the UAE leg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will proceed to the Netherlands for visits scheduled from May 15 to 17. During this European segment, he is expected to meet with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and hold interactions with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. The focus of discussions in the Netherlands is anticipated to shift towards semiconductors, green hydrogen, innovation, defence, and water management. These topics reflect the technological and environmental priorities that define the next phase of the tour.
The initial reception in Abu Dhabi and the specific topics outlined for future engagements suggest a coordinated effort to diversify and deepen India’s international economic footprint. The emphasis on clean energy and technology in both the UAE and Dutch legs indicates a strategic pivot towards sustainable growth and innovation partnerships.
