Police detain a Lucknow University assistant professor for allegedly trading exam answers for sexual favors, sparking campus unrest and criminal charges.
Police in Lucknow took an assistant professor from the zoology department into custody on Friday following the registration of a case regarding allegations that he leaked examination question papers in exchange for undue favors and made inappropriate advances toward a female student. The case was lodged at the Hasanganj police station on May 15, based on a written complaint submitted by the university’s Controller of Examinations. The accusation centers on the teacher allegedly engaging in obscene conversations and attempting to lure the student with promises of academic benefits.
The incident unfolded after several audio clips allegedly featuring the accused teacher went viral on social media and within the university community. In these recordings, the professor is heard making advances toward a female student while promising academic favors. According to the official complaint, three audio recordings were submitted in which the teacher can be heard asking the student to come to his office to collect question papers for two ongoing examinations in advance. University officials handed these audio clips to the police on a pen drive as crucial evidence for the investigation.
DCP Central Zone Vikrant Vir confirmed that the student had provided the university administration with audio recordings in which the professor was allegedly heard discussing the leaking of university examination question papers. He noted that the university first constituted an internal inquiry committee to examine the allegations before approaching the police. On the basis of the complaint, police registered an FIR under Section 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which relates to outraging the modesty of a woman, along with Sections 11 and 13(5) of the Uttar Pradesh Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.
In one of the audio clips, the accused is allegedly heard asking the student to meet him once a week in return for academic favors. The two-minute recording begins with the man asking about the girl’s mother’s health and claiming that he has several contacts at premier institutes. It ends with the girl saying that, under the pretext of helping her, he is calling her to the department to molest her again. In another audio, the man is heard offering financial help and pressuring the girl to accept favors, while she repeatedly kept rejecting them. The allegations triggered strong protests on the Lucknow University campus, where student members of various organizations staged demonstrations demanding the immediate termination and arrest of the assistant professor.
The protests escalated when students blackened the accused teacher’s face with ink and laid siege to the proctor’s office. Earlier, the student had filed a complaint with the university’s Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) formed under the law dealing with the prevention of sexual harassment at workplaces. She reached the proctor’s office along with representatives of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha to submit her complaint. While the student was allowed inside, other students were stopped, leading to heated exchanges with university officials. Protesters later sat on a dharna outside the office and attempted to force their way into the building.
When proctor Prof Rakesh Dwivedi called the accused teacher to his office after reviewing the complaint, protesting students intercepted him upon arrival and smeared black ink on his face. Members of the proctorial board and police intervened, moving the teacher into a locked room for protection. ICC member Anchal Srivastava and members of the proctorial board later assured protesters that action would follow after the inquiry, but the assurance did not calm the crowd, and another scuffle broke out. The student confirmed that she had filed a complaint with the ICC but declined further comment.
University authorities moved against the teacher after the audio clips became public, leading to the current criminal investigation. Investigators are currently examining the authenticity of the audio clips and trying to determine whether any final-year zoology examination papers were actually leaked or whether there was merely an attempt to manipulate the examination process. Police officials stated that the accused professor has been detained for questioning and that further legal action is in progress.
The incident has sparked a significant crisis of confidence within the academic community at Lucknow University. The viral nature of the audio recordings highlighted the urgent need for robust mechanisms to prevent sexual harassment and ensure academic integrity. Student leaders from the ABVP and other organizations have called for strict action, with ABVP leader Sri Jai Srivastava calling the incident deeply unfortunate and SCS member Shivaji Yadav demanding strict action against the accused. University spokesperson Mukul Srivastava stated that strict action would be taken if the teacher is found guilty.
The use of modern recording technology by students to document harassment illustrates a shift in how sexual harassment and academic misconduct are exposed in higher education. The swift police response and the application of the Uttar Pradesh Public Examination Act, 2024, indicate a tightening of legal frameworks around exam integrity. However, the violent nature of the protests suggests deep-seated frustration among the student body regarding gender safety and administrative accountability.
As the police continue to verify the authenticity of the audio evidence and investigate the scope of the alleged Exam Paper Leak, the university administration faces pressure to implement stricter monitoring protocols. The detention of the Assistant Professor serves as a stark warning to academic staff about the consequences of abusing their position for personal gain. The long-term impact may include heightened vigilance in examination processes and more rigorous training for faculty on professional conduct and legal liabilities. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how such hybrid crimes involving both sexual harassment and academic fraud are prosecuted in educational institutions across the state.
