Israel Strikes Iran as Mojtaba Khamenei Assumes Power

In a dramatic turn of events unfolding over the weekend, Israel has initiated wide-scale military operations targeting key Iranian locations. Simultaneously, the Islamic Republic is grappling with a leadership transition under fire. The IDF confirmed the commencement of strikes against infrastructure in Tehran, Isfahan, and southern regions. This military escalation coincides precisely with the Assembly of Experts naming Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader following the death of his father. New Delhi reports indicate the intensity of the situation has drawn global attention immediately.

Military Escalation and Strategic Targets

The Israeli Defence forces declared a broad offensive against the Iranian terror regime. Specific targets included command centres belonging to the Revolutionary Guards Corps and the Basij volunteer force located in Isfahan. Additionally, facilities involved in rocket engine production and missile launch sites were hit. While Iran has not officially confirmed these attacks, the intensity suggests a coordinated effort involving both United States and Israel. The bombardment has persisted for more than a week, marking a significant escalation in regional hostilities. Iranian officials presented the leadership appointment as a signal that they do not intend to yield in what they describe as a fight for the country's existence.

A Contested Succession Amidst War

Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed as the Supreme Leader on Sunday night, succeeding his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who was killed by an Israeli strike. The 56-year-old cleric had long been considered a potential successor despite never holding formal political office. He is known to wield significant influence behind the scenes in Iranian politics and maintains close ties with the Revolutionary Guards Corps. His wife Zahra Haddad Adel also perished in the same attack. Crowds gathered in Enghelab Square to pledge allegiance, carrying his portraits and national flags. However, internal criticism exists regarding hereditary succession, with some drawing parallels to the monarchy overthrown during the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Despite this, the Assembly of Experts voted for continuity, with senior official Ali Larijani stating they showed courage by meeting during air strikes. Mojtaba had long been viewed as a possible successor even before the strike killed his father.

Nuclear Fears and Economic Fallout

The leadership change raises serious questions regarding Iran's nuclear programme. Mojtaba is regarded as more hard-line than his father and will control decisions on nuclear assets. Although main nuclear sites were damaged in June, stocks of highly enriched uranium remain, sitting only a technical step from weapons-grade levels. Mojtaba could potentially decide to build a nuclear weapon, a path his father avoided. United States President Donald Trump dismissed him as unacceptable, describing him as a lightweight. While Israel has already listed him as a possible target, the geopolitical tension sent shockwaves through global markets. Brent crude oil surged to nearly $120 a barrel, representing a 65 per cent increase from the war's start, before retreating slightly. Iran's main nuclear sites were heavily damaged by United States bombing during the 12-day Israel-Iran war in June. Mojtaba had been trained by his father and was capable of managing the current situation according to Larijani.
