Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has submitted his resignation, paving the way for a new leadership election within the BJP legislature party.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. This strategic move initiates the process for the formation of a new government in the northeastern state. The Governor has accepted the request to dissolve the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly and has asked Sarma to continue serving as the caretaker Chief Minister until the new oath-taking ceremony takes place.
Following the meeting with the Governor, Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed journalists regarding the timeline for the next administration. He stated that the new Ministry would be sworn in after May 11. This date coincides with the election of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Legislature Party leader. Sarma indicated that the specific date for the legislature party meeting would be confirmed by Nadda’s office by Thursday, May 7, and the gathering would take place in the presence of central observers.
On Tuesday, May 5, the BJP Parliamentary Board made crucial appointments to oversee the transition. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda was appointed as the central observer for the election of the Assam BJP Legislature Party leader. Concurrently, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini was designated as the co-observer. These appointments underscore the central leadership's direct involvement in shaping the political future of Assam following the recent state elections.
Sarma explained the procedural next steps to the media. He noted that the BJP Legislature Party meeting would be held in the presence of Nadda and Saini. After the leader is elected, a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting would be convened. This subsequent meeting aims to propose support for the newly elected BJP Legislature Party leader. The coordination between the state party and the broader alliance ensures a unified front during the leadership transition.
The political landscape of Assam has shifted significantly following the single-phase polls held on April 9, 2026. The NDA swept these elections, securing a dominant position in the state assembly. The alliance won 102 out of the 126 total seats, demonstrating substantial voter support for the coalition. This result marks a decisive moment in Assam's political history, with the BJP playing a central role in the victory.
The BJP bagged 82 seats in the recent election. This tally is two short of the two-thirds majority mark, which would allow the party to govern independently without relying heavily on coalition partners. However, the alliance's overall strength comes from the contributions of its key allies. The Asom Gana Parishad won 10 seats, while the Bodoland People’s Front also secured 10 seats. This distribution highlights the importance of regional parties in maintaining the NDA's majority.
The remaining 24 seats were shared among several opposition parties and regional groups. The Congress party emerged as the primary opposition force, winning 19 seats. Its regional ally, Raijor Dal, secured 2 seats. Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front also won 2 seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress claimed 1 seat. This breakdown provides a clear picture of the opposition's footprint in the new assembly.
As the state prepares for a new Chief Minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony. A state BJP spokesperson confirmed that the Prime Minister’s presence is likely, indicating the high profile of the upcoming event. The inclusion of such a prominent national leader suggests that the leadership of Assam remains a priority for the central government.
The resignation of Himanta Biswa Sarma marks a pivotal moment for Assam's political trajectory. With the BJP holding 82 seats and strong allies, the new leader will likely inherit a robust mandate. The election of the legislature party leader before May 11 will solidify the government's structure. The NDA's overwhelming victory suggests a strong will to implement its agenda. As the oath-taking ceremony approaches, the state will witness a new chapter in its governance, driven by the central BJP leadership's oversight.
