Legal pressure mounts on Giribala Singh in Bhopal as authorities seek bail cancellation and regulatory scrutiny over her official conduct.
Twisha Sharma dowry death case: Legal mechanisms are converging on Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, who died under suspicious circumstances in Bhopal earlier this month. On Thursday, police issued a third and final notice to Singh, demanding she record her statement regarding the incident. This latest directive comes as authorities indicate they may petition the court for the cancellation of her anticipatory bail if she continues to evade cooperation. Simultaneously, the Madhya Pradesh government has initiated a review of her position as president of the Bhopal district consumer commission, questioning whether an individual under investigation for such severe allegations should remain in a leadership role within the consumer dispute redressal system.
The intensity of the probe has escalated significantly since Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s upscale Katara Hills locality on May 12. Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar revealed that earlier notices to Singh could not be personally served because she was absent from her residence. Consequently, the third notice was delivered via WhatsApp, a method necessitated by her unavailability. Under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities are generally exempt from being summoned to police stations, requiring investigators to record statements at home or mutual locations. However, Singh’s continued absence has prompted the police to consider more drastic legal measures.
Investigators have signaled that if Singh persists in avoiding the probe, they will approach the court to revoke the Giribala Singh anticipatory bail previously granted by a Bhopal sessions court. This legal maneuvering is part of a broader effort to ensure accountability in the Twisha Sharma dowry death case. Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, has already filed a petition seeking this specific cancellation, arguing that her current legal immunity is inappropriate given the gravity of the dowry harassment allegations. The case has now reached the Madhya Pradesh high court, where multiple petitions related to the alleged dowry death are scheduled to be heard by the vacation bench on Friday.
The investigation has not been without its controversies regarding evidence handling. Singh has approached a magistrate court, alleging significant lapses in the processing of electronic evidence. In an application to a Judicial Magistrate First Class court, she claimed that police failed to properly record the contents of a DVR linked to CCTV cameras installed at her residence. Singh argued that the CCTV system, maintained by a private firm, had not been regularly serviced, resulting in a timestamp discrepancy of two days, two hours, and 20 minutes. She contended that this technical error has fueled public confusion and requested that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formally document the DVR contents in the presence of independent witnesses.
Defence counsel Mrigendra Singh has vigorously contested the narrative presented by Twisha’s family. He argued that there is no suicide note left by Twisha and no prior allegations made against him or his wife before her death. Mrigendra accused the deceased woman’s family of spreading "canards" to tarnish the Singh family's reputation. To counter what he described as a coordinated smear campaign, Singh also sought directions to preserve electronic devices belonging to Twisha’s relatives. She alleged that manipulated WhatsApp chats were being circulated to influence public perception and requested court intervention to stop the spread of such disinformation.
On the opposing side, the family of the deceased maintains that Twisha, a Noida resident and former model-turned-actor, was a victim of dowry harassment. Authorities have registered an FIR against Samarth Singh, Twisha’s husband, and Giribala Singh under Sections 80(2), 85, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Samarth Singh remains absconding and has moved the Jabalpur bench of the high court seeking anticipatory bail, following the rejection of his earlier plea by a sessions court. Authorities have announced a cash reward for information leading to his arrest and are seeking the revocation of his passport.
The intersection of criminal liability and professional ethics defines the current phase of the Bhopal consumer commission review into Giribala Singh’s tenure. As the high court prepares to hear multiple petitions, the legal system must determine whether the alleged discrepancies in electronic evidence outweigh the gravity of the dowry harassment charges. The upcoming decisions will not only dictate the fate of Singh’s personal liberty but also establish a precedent for how public officials under investigation are managed. If her anticipatory bail is cancelled and her consumer commission role is terminated, it signals a stringent approach to accountability. Conversely, if the court accepts the defense’s claims of evidence tampering, the focus may shift back to the procedural integrity of the police investigation. The resolution of these concurrent legal battles will likely influence public trust in both the judicial and consumer protection frameworks in Madhya Pradesh, emphasizing the need for transparent evidence handling in high-profile dowry death cases.
