A father’s routine drive ended in a fatal ambush. Now, the man accused of hiring a hitman to kill Jared Bridegan faces justice, revealing a dark plot.
Jared Bridegan, a Microsoft executive, was killed in a targeted ambush in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, after stopping to move a tire placed in his path. His ex-wife, Shanna Gardner, and her husband, Mario Fernandez Saldana, are accused of planning the murder to eliminate Bridegan amid a bitter custody dispute. Fernandez Saldana’s trial begins Monday, marking a critical stage in uncovering the truth behind the cold, calculated killing.
The incident occurred in February 2022, when Bridegan stopped his car to remove an object from the road before being shot dead. Police described the event as a planned ambush, noting that Bridegan was unarmed and his personal items were left untouched. Investigators allege that Fernandez Saldana, who rents property to the shooter, orchestrated the crime. Prosecutors argue that Gardner, tired of sharing custody, wanted Bridegan removed from her life permanently.
Authorities uncovered a monthslong conspiracy involving multiple steps. Fernandez Saldana allegedly paid Henry Tenon, the man who pulled the trigger, through checks and phone contacts. Tenon had driven Bridegan’s route twice prior to the shooting to scout the location. Despite initially pleading guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for testimony, Tenon later claimed his statements were false and coerced.
Fernandez Saldana, now 38, faces charges including first-degree murder and solicitation to commit a capital felony. He has pleaded not guilty, and his legal team argues there is insufficient evidence to prove his guilt. During a bond hearing, defense attorney Jesse Dreicer challenged the reliability of Tenon’s testimony, suggesting it was fabricated under pressure. Fernandez Saldana’s defense also presented police interview footage where he claimed to be at home at the time of the shooting, arguing it was impossible for him to assist Tenon.
The investigation revealed a complex web of communication and financial transactions. Court documents and phone records show more than 60 contacts between Fernandez Saldana and Tenon. Three checks written by Fernandez Saldana to Tenon in October 2022 further solidified the prosecution’s case that Fernandez Saldana was integral to the conspiracy.
Meanwhile, Shanna Gardner, Bridegan’s ex-wife, was indicted on charges including first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation. Gardner has also pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for trial in early September. State Attorney Melissa Nelson emphasized that the investigation uncovered the central role Gardner played in the premeditated murder.
The case has drawn significant attention due to its premeditated nature and the familial relationship between the accused and the victim. Garden’s father was reportedly willing to pay off Bridegan to end the conflict, highlighting the depth of the animosity. Fernandez Saldana’s trial will focus on whether he actively solicited and planned the murder, or if he was merely a peripheral figure in a crime driven by Gardner.
Prosecutors will likely present GPS evidence showing Tenon’s vehicle moving along Bridegan’s route in the month leading up to the shooting. This "practice run" data is crucial in establishing the premeditated intent behind the ambush. The defense may attempt to cast doubt on the timeline and the connection between Fernandez Saldana and the actual shooter.
As the trial begins, the legal community watches closely to see if the evidence will hold up against the defense’s claims of coercion and lack of direct involvement. The outcome will determine not only the fate of Fernandez Saldana but also the understanding of how custody disputes can escalate into violent crimes.
The Jared Bridegan murder case highlights the extreme dangers of unresolved custody disputes. If Fernandez Saldana is convicted, it will set a precedent for how courts handle solicitation in family conflicts. The reliance on GPS and financial records suggests a shift toward digital forensics in such cases. As Gardner’s trial approaches, the public will scrutinize the extent of her involvement. The legal system must balance the need for justice with the complexity of familial motivations, ensuring that no one is beyond the law’s reach.
