Diplomatic efforts intensify as Jared Kushner meets regional leaders in Egypt to salvage a Gaza ceasefire plan, even as US-Iran naval clashes escalate near the Strait of Hormuz.
In a high-stakes diplomatic push, US envoy Jared Kushner traveled to Egypt on Sunday to meet with key regional leaders, including Hamas’s new chief, Khalil al-Hayya, in an effort to advance a Gaza ceasefire plan that had previously been rejected by Israel. Simultaneously, tensions between the United States and Iran remained critical, with maritime intelligence showing increased volatility around the Strait of Hormuz as tracking difficulties mask the true volume of oil shipments amid a naval blockade.
The diplomatic agenda focused heavily on concretizing the next steps of the 15-point peace plan announced by President Donald Trump. Kushner’s meeting with al-Hayya and Board of Peace director Nickolay Mladenov in El Alamein aimed to secure Hamas’s commitment to disarmament, contingent upon Israel fulfilling its own obligations. This follows a previous agreement in October that led to the release of hostages, though current negotiations face significant hurdles due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s public rejection of the deal and his insistence on total Hamas disarmament prior to any military withdrawal.
As diplomatic channels attempted to cool tensions in Gaza, the physical conflict widened across the region. The armed forces of Yemen’s internationally recognized government reported carrying out 181 attacks against Houthi rebels in the past 24 hours, claiming dozens of militants were killed or wounded. This surge in violence reflects the escalating rivalry between the Iran-backed Houthis and Saudi-backed forces, who have engaged in frequent drone strikes and clashes for weeks. The Houthis, part of Iran’s "Axis of Resistance," continue to utilize domestically produced missiles and drones, prompting US warships like the USS Carney to respond to distress calls in the Red Sea.
Maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz has become increasingly opaque, with analysts noting that many vessels are turning off satellite trackers to disguise oil exports from Iran and evade detection. While US Energy Secretary Chris Wright claimed that 8 to 9 million barrels of oil daily pass through the strait, independent data shows erratic traffic patterns, including days with no visible crude-oil tankers. This secrecy complicates the enforcement of US naval blockades and contributes to the broader geopolitical standoff, which includes US President Donald Trump’s threat to declare the strait a US territory.
On the military front, US Central Command Chief Adm. Brad Cooper visited the USS Abraham Lincoln to address crew morale issues. Despite concerns over mental health among the crew during their nine-month deployment, Cooper stated the carrier has among the lowest number of mental health cases compared to other active Navy carriers. The Lincoln has been supporting operations against Iran, including port blockades, which have prevented the ship from making standard supply stops.
Kushner’s mission includes further meetings with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, where he will relay greetings from President Trump and reaffirm the administration’s Middle East goals. However, progress remains stalled by political realities in Israel, where an upcoming election limits Netanyahu’s willingness to make concessions. Meanwhile, the breakdown of the June memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran has led to resumed hostilities, including Iranian attacks on commercial vessels and subsequent US strikes. As both diplomatic and military fronts remain active, the region faces a precarious balance between negotiation and escalation.
