NEET-UG 2026 cancellation sends shockwaves as CBI probes paper leak, NTA promises re-exam amid political fury and student anxiety over ruined dreams.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination following severe allegations of a paper leak that compromised the integrity of the test conducted on May 3, 2026. This decision comes amid a growing criminal investigation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which registered a First Information Report (FIR) on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, to probe the alleged irregularities. The cancellation has triggered widespread outrage among the 22 to 23 lakh candidates affected, sparking political condemnation and deep anxiety among students whose medical dreams have been abruptly halted.
Abhishek Singh, the Director General of the NTA, who assumed charge just forty days prior, addressed the controversy by stating that the agency had assured students of a zero-error examination. "The question is not whether the leak was localised or not, it is that if integrity of the process was violated, it was violated," Singh told The Hindu. He emphasized that while he is not pre-judging the CBI inquiry, the agency will conduct a re-examination in the minimal possible time. Singh noted that the NTA had previously blocked 120 Telegram channels and issued warnings against scammers, yet the breach still occurred, leading to the decision to scrap the current cycle.
The NTA has clarified that students do not need to register again for the reconducted exam. Registration data and candidature from the May 2026 cycle will be carried forward, and fresh admit cards will be issued. The examination centres opted for in the original cycle will largely be carried forward, though the agency has not fully ruled out potential changes in centre allotment. The specific dates for the re-examination are yet to be announced, with the NTA stating that the schedule will be communicated through official channels in the coming days.
Political fallout has been immediate and severe. The Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir has demanded a Supreme Court-monitored investigation, calling the issue a "very serious" matter. JKPCC Working President Raman Bhalla alleged that repeated paper leaks have become a "money-minting machine" under the current government. Similarly, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister, asserting that the so-called ‘amrit kaal’ has become a ‘vish kaal’ for students. Gandhi claimed that fathers took loans and mothers sold jewellery, only to face "organized corruption in education," describing the cancellation as a "crime against the future of the youth."
RJD national working president Tejashwi Yadav also condemned the Centre, questioning the government's administrative competence. He asked if the BJP government lacked the "basic administrative capacity, willpower, and skill" to conduct a simple exam without leaks. Yadav highlighted that the endless chain of paper leaks in Bihar and across the country shows no signs of stopping, further toyed with the futures of 23 lakh students. In Rajasthan, Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully alleged that the cancellation was proof of organized irregularities, noting that eighty-nine paper leak cases had occurred during the BJP’s ten-year tenure. He criticized the state government for attempting to suppress the matter for two weeks.
In Maharashtra, NCP-SP MLA Rohit Pawar stated that the state is facing "significant embarrassment" due to the scam, which affects 2.25 lakh students in the state alone. Pawar noted that although a law against paper leaks was enacted, it had shortcomings that were left unheard. Meanwhile, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan refused to take any questions from the media regarding the cancellation, refusing to address the issue publicly.
The emotional impact on students has been profound, particularly in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, candidates described the cancellation as the second such instance in three years, causing immense distress. Varsha R., a candidate appearing for the third time, expressed complete disappointment, asking how one could trust the NTA again after such carelessness. She highlighted the sacrifices made during their college years and youth to prepare for the exam, noting that the stress and anxiety are now back.
In Kerala, outgoing General Education Minister V. Sivankutty accused the Centre and NTA of "grave negligence and lack of vigilance." He argued that the cancellation exposed a mishandling of the examination process that undermines the credibility and transparency of the national testing system. Similarly, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal called the cancellation "extremely unfortunate," placing a serious question mark on the functioning of the NTA. He demanded a thorough, time-bound CBI investigation to examine the role of all agencies involved, ensuring such critical national-level exams are conducted flawlessly in the future.
The CBI's registration of the FIR marks a critical step in determining the scale of the breach, with an accused already detained in Nashik. As the NTA prepares for the re-examination, the pressure is mounting to ensure a secure process given the agency's prior claims of strict vigilance. The upcoming months will test the government's ability to restore trust in the medical admissions process, as students await concrete dates for their re-test amidst ongoing political debates and judicial scrutiny of the systemic failures that led to this crisis.
