Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar asserts he voluntarily placed his son before investigators in a serious legal matter, sparking debate on legal transparency.
Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar stated on Saturday that he has "handed over" his son, Bandi Bhageerath, to the Telangana Police in connection with a case involving the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The minister, who previously served as the chief of the BJP’s Telangana unit, took to social media platform X to assert that "all are equal before the law." He emphasized that his son had gone before the police through advocates for investigation, framing the event as a demonstration of respect for the judiciary. "Satyameva Jayate," he wrote, adding that whether the subject is his son or a common citizen, everyone remains equal under the law. He further noted that while court orders were expected the following week, he felt no hesitation in cooperating with the inquiry, expressing complete faith that "justice may be delayed, but not denied."
However, the narrative of a voluntary surrender was immediately contradicted by law enforcement officials. Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dr M Ramesh explicitly denied that Bandi Bhageerath had surrendered. Instead, he stated that the accused had been apprehended on the outskirts of Hyderabad and was being shifted to the police station for further legal procedures. Despite this clarification from the police, Bandi Sanjay Kumar maintained that his son himself appeared before the police, sharing a photograph on X that he claimed showed Bhageerath leaving for questioning. This discrepancy highlights the tension between the political figure's public stance and the official police account of the arrest.
Bandi Sanjay Kumar provided additional context regarding the legal basis of the case. The FIR was registered on May 8 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act, based on a complaint filed by the mother of a 17-year-old girl. The complainant alleged that Bandi Bhageerath was in a relationship with her daughter and had sexually harassed the minor. Following the recording of the victim’s statement, more stringent provisions of the POCSO Act were invoked. The Telangana High Court had recently declined to grant Bhageerath interim protection from arrest, with Justice T Madhava Devi hearing the matter until nearly midnight and indicating that orders would be issued on the next vacation court day.
The minister’s son, Bandi Bhageerath, has filed a counter-complaint in Karimnagar, alleging that the girl’s family pressured him into marriage and demanded money. He claimed he accompanied the family to holy places as part of a group of friends, believing them to be trustworthy. According to his complaint, after he refused their demand for marriage, they allegedly demanded Rs 50,000, which he paid out of fear, and later escalated their demands to Rs 5 crore. He further alleged threats regarding the girl’s mother’s suicide if his demands were not met. An FIR was registered on his complaint, creating a complex legal landscape with opposing narratives.
Amid the legal proceedings, Bandi Sanjay Kumar opened up about the personal toll the situation has taken on his family. He described the past week as one of the most emotionally difficult phases of their lives, marked by pain, anxiety, and helplessness. He revealed that his mother suffered a heart stroke during this traumatic period. Despite the strain, he expressed immense gratitude for the support received from lakhs of people across the country, thanking BJP karyaktas, leaders, friends, and the media. He urged supporters not to be emotionally distracted but to continue strengthening the party in Telangana, asserting that his family would face the situation with "courage, patience and faith."
The incident has drawn significant attention due to the minister's high profile and his explicit statement that he voluntarily placed his son in the hands of the police. While police maintain it was an apprehension, Sanjay Kumar’s insistence on his son's innocence and his portrayal of the event as a cooperative act with the law has framed the public discourse. As the legal process continues, with court orders pending, the case remains a focal point of intersection between political accountability, legal procedure, and public sentiment. The minister’s reliance on the legal process, rather than seeking special treatment, sets a precedent in how high-profile figures might handle legal challenges, though the contradiction with police records remains a key point of contention.
The case against Bandi Bhageerath is currently proceeding through the standard judicial channels, with the Telangana High Court having denied interim bail and indicated further orders pending the next vacation court session. The involvement of stringent POCSO provisions underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the allegations, while the counter-complaint filed by the accused adds a layer of complexity that will require thorough investigation by law enforcement. As the legal battle unfolds, the public narrative will likely remain divided between the minister’s claims of voluntary cooperation and the police’s assertion of apprehension. The outcome of this case could have broader implications for how political figures are perceived when facing legal scrutiny, potentially influencing public trust in the equality of justice regardless of political stature. The ongoing tension between the conflicting accounts of the arrest highlights the importance of transparent and verified reporting in high-profile legal matters.
