Apple debuts its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, alongside upgraded iPhone 18 Pro models and the new Apple Watch Series 12, redefining mobile personal hubs.
Apple’s latest 'Surprise and Shine' event marked a significant shift in its product lineup with the introduction of its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, alongside substantial upgrades to its flagship iPhone 18 Pro series and the Apple Watch Series 12. The announcement, delivered by John Ternus and Tim Cook, highlights Apple’s strategic push into new hardware categories while reinforcing its ecosystem’s integration with advanced AI technologies.
The event opened with a cinematic video clip showcasing content created entirely on an iPhone, setting the stage for a deep dive into hardware and software capabilities. Tim Cook handed over to John Ternus, who emphasized the importance of designing a reliable, intelligent personal hub. Ternus noted the pride in the teams behind the new devices, framing the launch as a response to user needs for durability, versatility, and premium design.
A major highlight was the debut of the iPhone Duo, Apple’s entry into the foldable market. Designed to avoid the plastic feel and visible creasing associated with rival devices, the iPhone Duo features a metal-heavy, premium construction inspired by Apple’s existing hardware. The device utilizes a specialized hinge that allows it to lay completely flat when opened, maintaining a consistent aspect ratio across its inner 7.6-inch and outer 5.4-inch displays. Ternus described the design as resembling a passport, noting it offers the largest display ever on an iPhone while remaining pocketable.
Under the hood, the iPhone Duo is powered by the A20 Pro chip, built on 2-nanometer technology. This processor includes a 6-core CPU with two "desktop class" super-cores and a new Neural Engine, enabling advanced on-device AI. The device supports Liquid Glass for seamless content transitions and iOS 27, which has been adapted for multi-tasking across screens. With storage options ranging from 256 GB to 2 TB and retailing at $1,999, the iPhone Duo will be available in late October, promising up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display.
Also announced were the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which see significant upgrades in performance and photography. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the Pro Max is priced at $1,299. Both models feature the A20 Pro chip, but the Pro Max offers the largest battery life increase in iPhone history, delivering 30 hours of usage per charge compared to the Pro’s 24 hours. Apple touted improved thermal management for sustained performance, a critical factor for gaming and AI tasks.
Camera systems on the iPhone 18 Pro have been overhauled. The device features a 48 MP fusion main camera with variable apertures that automatically adjust to lighting conditions, paired with intelligent software for better low-light performance. Pro controls now allow manual adjustments for shutter speed, catering to photographers and cinematographers. New Photographic Styles offer texture and grain control, while the Dynamic Island has been refined to be smaller, clearer, and capable of displaying three live activities simultaneously.
The launch also featured the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4. The Series 12, starting at $399, introduces a 'Health Sensing System' with improved electrode surface areas, redesigned photo-diodes, and enhanced green LEDs for more accurate heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) data collection. The device supports Audio Intelligence, helping users who are deaf or hard of hearing recognize sounds like sirens, while Live Rewind allows users to recall audio from 15 seconds ago.
The Apple Watch Series 12 integrates Apple Intelligence to provide personalized workout suggestions via the Health app and features a new Longevity tab for holistic health assessments. Siri on the watch can now transcribe and recap meetings using ambient listening, though privacy is maintained by not storing raw audio or identifying speakers. The Apple Watch Ultra 4, priced at $799, extends battery life to over two days and shares similar health and AI advancements.
Apple’s commitment to on-device AI was a recurring theme, with officials reiterating the concept of "personal intelligence." Siri has been enhanced to recall past messages, explore real-world content, and take actions across apps, with a new Siri app located on the home screen. Apple Intelligence features, including image generation and precise photo editing, are being rolled out in beta in English, with usage limits based on subscriptions.
Apple’s introduction of the foldable iPhone Duo and upgraded wearables signals a aggressive expansion of its hardware portfolio. The emphasis on on-device AI and privacy suggests a long-term strategy to differentiate from competitors relying on cloud-based processing. As the iPhone Duo enters a market previously dominated by mixed reviews, Apple’s focus on premium materials and seamless integration with iOS 27 could reshape consumer expectations for foldable durability and functionality. Simultaneously, the advanced health sensors in the Apple Watch Series 12 may push Apple further into the preventive healthcare sector, leveraging its vast user data for personalized medical insights. The company’s reliance on upgrade leasing and exchange programs indicates a continued focus on recurring revenue streams even as device prices rise. This coordinated hardware and software push aims to solidify Apple’s position as the central hub for both personal productivity and health monitoring in the coming years.
