Tensions within the AIADMK surfaced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, where conflicting letters regarding leadership support reveal a deepening rift between party factions.
The churning within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) became undeniably evident in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday, May 11, 2026. This internal friction was clearly reflected in the varied reception provided by party legislators to key figures, signaling a growing divide within the ranks.
The reception offered to party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and rebel leader S.P. Velumani upon entering the House highlighted a stark contrast to historical norms. Unlike the last five years, where Palaniswami typically entered the Assembly premises accompanied by a large contingent of supportive colleagues, this time he was escorted by only a handful of MLAs. This sparse turnout suggested a significant erosion of visible loyalty among the party's legislative wing.
Meanwhile, S.P. Velumani, who previously served as the Local Administration Minister in the Palaniswami Cabinet and was often seen alongside the former Chief Minister, arrived at the Assembly premises later in the day. He was accompanied by former Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar, further indicating a coordinated movement among certain former ministers. The atmosphere remained tense as both figures were sworn in as MLAs. The reception they received from their colleagues, marked by thumping of desks, was barely different from one another, sending a clear message that the challenge to Palaniswami’s leadership was now open and overt.
The roots of this public discord appeared to be solidified in the preceding days. For the last four days, the residence of former Law Minister C.Ve. Shanmugam, located on Karpagam Avenue near Foreshore Estate, served as the primary hub for dissidents within the AIADMK. A large number of MLAs and other office bearers were involved in intensive discussions at this location, chalking out their future course of action. Notably, Shanmugam did not attend the morning oath-taking event but arrived at the Assembly around 3:15 p.m., where he was sworn in as an MLA.
The formalization of the leadership contest began after the swearing-in ceremonies concluded. A letter, purportedly signed by a group of AIADMK legislators, was submitted to Pro-tem Speaker M.V. Karuppaiah at his chamber. This document asserted that Palaniswami had been elected the Leader of the Legislature Party. However, the claims regarding the extent of this support were immediately disputed. Media reports cited varying numbers of legislators in support of the general secretary, with some sections claiming 17 supporters, while a member of the Palaniswami camp insisted the number was 24. O.S. Manian, the former Handlooms Minister who handed over this letter, stated he was unaware of its specific contents, merely noting, “I did what I was asked to do.”
In a direct counter-movement, Shanmugam, accompanied by Velumani and several other former ministers including Natham R. Viswanathan and R. Kamaraj, visited the Pro-tem Speaker’s office around 6 p.m. They presented a competing letter claiming support from 30 MLAs for Velumani’s leadership. This simultaneous submission of rival letters underscored the fragmented nature of the party’s current legislative strength.
Despite the escalating tensions, Palaniswami attempted to downplay the severity of the situation earlier in the day. He refuted journalists’ suggestions that the party was heading towards a permanent split, maintaining a public facade of unity even as behind-the-scenes maneuvers suggested otherwise.
The current dispute bears the shadow of past ideological and strategic divides. Approximately two years ago, following a significant defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, a delegation of six leaders-including Shanmugam, Velumani, and Viswanathan-had approached Palaniswami. They urged him to pursue reconciliation with former party leaders, specifically mentioning V.K. Sasikala. The recurrence of Shanmugam and Velumani in prominent roles within the current dissent suggests that unresolved grievances or strategic differences from that period may be fueling the present leadership contest.
The situation remains volatile as the Pro-tem Speaker processes the conflicting claims. The physical evidence of divided loyalty, from the sparse escort of Palaniswami to the competing letters of support, paints a picture of an organization in deep crisis. The open challenge to the general secretary’s authority is no longer just a rumor but a documented reality within the Assembly corridors.
The immediate future of the AIADMK hinges on the validation of the conflicting MLA support letters and the subsequent decisions by the Pro-tem Speaker. If the claim of 30 MLAs supporting Velumani holds true, it would significantly weaken Palaniswami’s position, potentially forcing a renegotiation of party power dynamics. Conversely, if the support for Palaniswami is validated, the dissenting faction may continue to operate as a bloc outside the main leadership structure. The visible fractures, evidenced by the distinct entry patterns and the coordinated meetings at Shanmugam’s residence, suggest that a formal split is likely unless a high-level reconciliation occurs. The long-term impact could involve a reshuffling of party offices, potential defections, and a redefinition of the party’s alliance strategies in upcoming state elections, as both factions vie for legitimacy and control over the party’s organizational machinery.
