Ten died when a cruise boat capsized at Bargi Dam. One Delhi woman’s final video call reveals the terror of the Jabalpur Boat Tragedy.
NEW DELHI: A festive journey to celebrate a housewarming in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur turned into a nightmare for a Delhi family when their cruise boat capsized at the Bargi Dam. The incident has claimed at least ten lives, with several others still missing, while survivors recount harrowing moments of panic and failed safety protocols. The tragedy has ignited intense scrutiny over tourist safety regulations and emergency response mechanisms in the region.
According to officials, the Jabalpur Boat Tragedy occurred on Thursday evening when a vessel operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department lost its balance and overturned due to a sudden storm. Around 28 people have been rescued, but search operations remain ongoing. The Massey family from Delhi Cantonment had traveled to Jabalpur earlier in the week to attend a relative's housewarming ceremony. After the event on Tuesday, they decided to extend their stay for a day of sightseeing before returning home. However, their plans were cut short when they boarded the cruise boat at the Bargi Dam on the Narmada River.
The vessel, carrying between 40 to 43 passengers, was caught in a sudden storm characterized by strong winds and heavy waves. The turbulent conditions caused the boat to become unbalanced, leading to its eventual capsize. Among those who perished were Marina, 39; her four-year-old son, Trishan; and her mother, Madhur Massey, 62. Marina’s husband, Pradeep, their 14-year-old daughter, Siya, and her father, Julius Massey, 65, survived the incident. The loss of these three family members has been particularly devastating, underscored by a chilling video clip that has surfaced from moments before the disaster.
Marina’s brother, Kuldeep Mohan, revealed that the family had been in regular contact and were expected to return to Delhi by Friday. However, the sightseeing trip altered their itinerary tragically. Kuldeep described the final moments of Marina’s life, which were captured during a video call with their family back in Delhi. "My sister was on a video call with us, showing us the view and the water. Then suddenly everything changed," Kuldeep told PTI. He recounted how Marina’s peaceful demeanor shifted to pure terror as the weather deteriorated. "She kept crying, ‘Save me... save me...’ and after that, the phone disconnected," he said, highlighting the abrupt and terrifying end to their communication.
The sequence of events on the boat unfolded rapidly. Kuldeep noted that the family members were on the upper deck when the weather worsened. "The waves started rising, and the cruise became unbalanced. Everyone from the first floor rushed downstairs. The boat was shaking badly, and water began entering," he explained. As panic spread among the passengers, Pradeep, who knew how to swim, began distributing life jackets. However, the response came too late for many. "Some wore the jackets, while some jumped into the water in fear. Those who jumped were saved by local villagers using ropes and rescue equipment," Kuldeep added. He confirmed that his father was among those rescued by the villagers' heroic efforts.
Despite Pradeep’s attempts to save himself and his teenage daughter, he was unable to locate his sister, her child, and his mother in time. "By the time my brother-in-law could look for my sister, her child and my mother, they had gone missing under the ship," Kuldeep stated. The speed at which the boat capsized and the intensity of the waves left little room for effective emergency action by the passengers.
Relatives of the victims have leveled serious allegations of negligence against the boat operators and local authorities. Kuldeep Mohan argued that the tragedy could have been prevented with proper communication. "A yellow alert had already been issued, but no one informed them. If they had told people the weather was dangerous, and the boat could not operate, nobody would have boarded," he stated. He also criticized the lack of permanent rescue infrastructure at the tourist spot, noting that the shore was only 150 to 200 meters away yet strong waves prevented people from reaching safety easily.
Another relative, Sangeeta Kori, raised concerns about the vessel's condition and operation. She alleged that the boat was overloaded and that warnings from locals were ignored. "It is sheer negligence. They have turned it into a source of income, and there was no concern for safety," Kori said. She claimed that villagers were signaling the boat captain to steer toward safer waters, but he continued in the opposite direction until it capsized. "Had he brought it this side, they might have been saved," she added.
Preliminary investigations indicate that wind speeds surged to 60-70 kmph on Thursday evening, creating turbulent conditions that destabilized the vessel. Survivors and relatives also allege that life jackets were distributed only after the boat began to sink, providing insufficient time for passengers to secure them. This delay, combined with the sudden onset of the storm, likely contributed to the high casualty rate.
The Madhya Pradesh state government has ordered a probe into the incident to determine the cause of the capsizing and assess the extent of negligence. In response to the loss of life, the government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the safety standards of tourist boats in the region and the necessity for stricter enforcement of weather advisories.
The Bargi Dam Capsize has exposed critical vulnerabilities in the management of water-based tourism in Madhya Pradesh. The incident suggests a systemic failure to heed weather warnings and prioritize passenger safety over operational continuity. As investigations proceed, the findings will likely dictate stricter regulations for tourist operators, including mandatory weather checks and real-time communication protocols. The tragedy serves as a grim reminder that without robust emergency infrastructure and immediate regulatory oversight, tourist spots remain vulnerable to catastrophic failures, necessitating a comprehensive review of state tourism policies to prevent similar losses of life in the future.
