President Murmu and PM Modi spearhead nationwide yoga events on International Day of Yoga 2026, emphasizing healthy ageing and holistic well-being across India.
International Day of Yoga was celebrated across India on Sunday, June 21, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the nation’s observations from the historic Red Road in Kolkata. The 12th annual celebration saw participation from top political leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alongside millions of citizens engaging in mass yoga sessions. The events underscored the practice’s role in promoting holistic health and national unity, aligning with the year’s specific focus on wellness across different age groups.
The celebrations began at dawn, with Prime Minister Modi participating in the Common Yoga Protocol alongside thousands of practitioners. The event was flanked by the Indian Army’s Eastern Command headquarters and the sprawling Maidan, symbolizing the deep integration of yoga into national life. Mr. Modi highlighted that June 21, recognized as the longest day on Earth, has become a global symbol of this ancient Indian heritage. He emphasized that yoga teaches the "dos and don’ts" of living a balanced life, urging the nation to aim for greater energy at age 50 than at 30. He stated that yoga provides a path to physical fitness through mental health, helping individuals find balance in a rapidly changing world.
President Droupadi Murmu led the state-level celebrations in Madhya Pradesh, performing asanas at the Garrison Ground in Jabalpur. She was accompanied by MP Governor Mangubhai Patel and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Across the state, thousands participated in mass sessions, with Bhopal’s TT Nagar Stadium hosting large crowds. The administration in Bhopal provided extensive security, medical aid, and drinking water facilities to ensure safety. In Indore, participants performed Bhramari Pranayama for over three minutes, reflecting growing public awareness of wellness activities.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah performed yoga exercises in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, describing the practice as India’s "invaluable gift to humankind." He noted that yoga nourishes holistic well-being by energizing the mind, body, and soul. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasized this year’s theme, stating that the message is clear: people can remain healthy through yoga. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi also attended the Ahmedabad programme, highlighting the state's active role in the celebrations.
The theme of “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” was central to many regional events. In Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha addressed the gathering at SKICC on the banks of Dal Lake. He described yoga as a "powerful ray of hope" against rising stress and modern health challenges. Mr. Sinha urged residents to commit to a healthier lifestyle, calling yoga a treasure that harmonizes the mind and body and bridges the bond between humanity and nature.
In Manipur, Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh joined Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium. Mr. Singh described yoga as a timeless gift promoting physical well-being and mental resilience. He watched the live telecast of the Prime Minister’s address from Kolkata, echoing the call to embrace the practice for a more mindful society. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar participated at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore. The event highlighted the importance of enhancing healthspan alongside lifespan, with students, faculty, and the public embracing yoga for harmony and inner peace.
Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth performed yoga in Rameswaram, while Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan joined events in Coimbatore. In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stressed that yoga helps keep one free from disease. Speaking in Jhansi, he articulated the connection between a healthy body, a healthy brain, and a healthy soul, urging people to take up yoga. Union Minister of State for Ayush Dayashankar Mishra joined the CM in Jhansi for the session.
The armed forces played a significant role in the celebrations. From high-altitude mountains to parade grounds, personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force participated in yoga sessions. In Delhi, the Indian Army hosted an event at the Cariappa Parade Ground, where about 3,500 people, including army personnel, families, NCC cadets, and school children, gathered at 6 am. Similar events were held across all Army commands, including Northern, Western, Eastern, Southern, Central, and South Western Commands, aimed at promoting physical fitness and mental resilience.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh celebrated the occasion at an Indian Air Force Advanced Landing Ground in Upper Shillong. He described yoga as not merely the foundation of a healthy body but a path to a balanced and disciplined life. Mr. Singh credited Prime Minister Modi’s visionary leadership for transforming yoga into a "global people’s movement." He urged citizens to make yoga an integral part of their daily lives to build a healthy body, a peaceful mind, and a strong nation. He called yoga a symbol of power from India’s ancient tradition of knowledge, paving the way for the welfare of all humanity.
The widespread participation in International Day of Yoga across diverse geographical and administrative boundaries demonstrates a concerted national effort to institutionalize wellness practices. With key figures like PM Narendra Modi, President Murmu, and various union ministers and chief ministers actively participating, the event has evolved from a symbolic observance to a structured public health initiative. The specific focus on "Healthy Ageing" suggests a strategic pivot toward preventive care, addressing the needs of an aging population amidst modern stressors.
The extensive involvement of the armed forces and the detailed logistical arrangements in cities like Bhopal and Delhi indicate that yoga is being treated with the seriousness of a national security and public health priority. As officials emphasize the connection between mental resilience and physical fitness, the long-term impact is likely to be a more robust, healthier population with reduced burden on healthcare systems. The integration of yoga into daily routines, as urged by defense and political leaders, points toward a future where holistic well-being is a standard metric of national progress, ensuring that the "invaluable gift" of yoga continues to nourish India’s collective body and soul for decades to come.
