Released in a statement on Friday, the forecast highlights a dramatic escalation in global weather patterns that threatens to exceed all modern records.
This powerful climatic event is expected to trigger a cascade of environmental disruptions, including heightened risks of prolonged droughts, soaring high temperatures, and torrential rainfall that could lead to extreme weather crises across multiple continents. The agency emphasized that the scale of this event is not merely a historical anomaly but a significant departure from previous occurrences.
Typically, El Nino events are characterized by sea surface temperature rises between 1 and 2 degrees Celsius. However, the Met Office’s models for the 2026 iteration predict a startling deviation, with forecasts indicating record-breaking values exceeding 3 degrees Celsius in the coming months. This magnitude represents a substantial increase over the baseline conditions usually associated with the climatic cycle.
Adam Scaife, the head of the office’s long-range forecasting, characterized the situation with serious urgency. “We should be clear that this is an unprecedented event,” Scaife stated, noting his personal experience with meteorological data. “I have never seen an El Nino signal this intense in our forecasts.” His assessment underscores the rarity and potential severity of the upcoming climatic shift.

Conversely, the Met Office indicated that the climatic shift will also bring wetter, stormier conditions to northwestern Europe, including the United Kingdom, as autumn and winter arrive in the Northern Hemisphere. This duality of extreme drought in some regions and intensified storms in others illustrates the complex global reach of the Pacific’s thermal changes.
The forecast arrives at a time when governments around the world are already grappling with historic climate events. So far this year, wildfires have burned through more than 200,000 hectares in Indonesia and spread across southwestern Europe. These fires have forced the displacement of at least 325,000 people in Spain and France alone, while other nations struggle with severe drought conditions that have strained local resources and infrastructure.
Evidence of the warming trend is already visible in the UK. In mid-August, the country recorded its hottest day of the year, with temperatures in west London climbing to 38.1 degrees Celsius. They warned that when combined with the effects of human-induced climate change, the current trajectory makes it “very likely” that 2027 will become the hottest year on record globally.
