MP Mahua Moitra demands no-fly list action for men chanting anti-TMC slogans on a flight, blaming BJP culture for the harassment.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has intensified her political rhetoric following a contentious air travel experience, urging authorities to take strict action against individuals who allegedly harassed her aboard a commercial flight. The incident highlights the heightened tensions in the national capital and underscores the broader political fallout from the recent assembly polls.
Moitra, who traveled to Delhi on official business to attend a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence meeting, shared a video on social media platform X that depicts a group of men raising anti-TMC slogans as her flight landed at the national capital. The MP identified herself as the target of this harassment, describing the actions as a violation of her safety within the aircraft rather than a display of "citizen anger."
The incident took place on IndiGo flight 6E 719, which departed from Kolkata and arrived in Delhi. Moitra, seated at 1F, reported that four to six men boarded the aircraft in a group, leered at her, and moved to the back of the plane. She noted that the filming occurred after the plane landed but before the doors opened. The video, which she claims was forwarded to her after being circulated by "Sanghis" on social media, captures the men chanting slogans such as “Jai Shri Ram,” “TMC chor,” “Pishi chor,” “Bhaipo chor,” and “Trinamoole sab chor.” These slogans were apparently directed at TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee.
In her post, Moitra directly addressed IndiGo and Union Minister of Civil Aviation K Ram Mohan Naidu, demanding that the airline identify the individuals via crew reports and place them on a no-fly list. She stated, "This is no 'citizen anger'. This is harassment & violates my safety in an aircraft. No way that these louts can get away with this harassment inside an airplane." She further criticized the airline for initially stating they needed a formal complaint, confirming she was sending one. Moitra framed the incident as evidence of the prevailing political climate, stating, "This is BJP culture. Why is anyone surprised?"
The flight incident occurs against the backdrop of a significant political shift in West Bengal. The Trinamool Congress, which had ruled the state since 2011, failed to secure a fourth consecutive term in the recent assembly polls. The Trinamool Congress won 80 seats in the 294-member assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory with 207 seats, marking the party's first government in the state. The election process involved voting on April 23 and 29, with counting taking place on May 4.
Despite the electoral defeat, Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign, alleging irregularities by the Election Commission. However, Governor RN Ravi dissolved the assembly on Thursday, bringing the previous House’s five-year term to an end. This move paves the way for the formation of the new government, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah scheduled to visit Kolkata on Friday to announce the BJP’s chief ministerial pick.
The leadership contest within the BJP has seen Suvendu Adhikari emerge as the frontrunner for the post of chief minister. Adhikari, a former close aide of Mamata Banerjee, defeated her in the 2021 Nandigram contest and recently won from her Bhowanipore stronghold in the general elections. A grand swearing-in ceremony is planned for the day following Shah’s announcement.
While Moitra ignored the harassment on the day of the incident and proceeded to her meeting, her subsequent public call-out has sparked debate. Her remark regarding "BJP culture" connects the personal harassment to the broader party rivalry. The Trinamool Congress faces the challenge of restructuring after its exit from power, while the BJP consolidates its position in West Bengal.
The harassment incident involving Mahua Moitra underscores the volatile atmosphere following the West Bengal Election results. As the BJP prepares to take charge in Kolkata, political discourse in Delhi continues to reflect the intensifying rivalry between the central government and opposition leaders. Moitra’s demand for strict aviation penalties highlights the increasing use of regulatory frameworks in political disputes. The transition of power in West Bengal, with Suvendu Adhikari poised to become chief minister, marks a definitive end to the Trinamool Congress’s decade-long rule. Future interactions between TMC leaders and the central authorities may see heightened scrutiny and legal challenges, potentially influencing national political narratives in the coming months.
