Tragedy strikes the Aggarwal family as eight members lose their lives in a Delhi hotel fire. This article details the heartbreaking search for survivors and the circumstances leading to the disaster.
The recent Malviya Nagar fire has left the Aggarwal family grappling with immense loss, as eight members of their extended clan perished in the blaze. The incident at the Flourish Stay bed-and-breakfast facility in Delhi resulted in a devastating tragedy, prompting a frantic search for survivors that ultimately ended in grief. Relatives rushed to hospitals and mortuaries, trying to piece together the fate of loved ones who had gathered to support a sick relative.
Yogesh Aggarwal and his aunt, Sarita Devi, were among the first to arrive at the AIIMS Trauma Centre around 3:30 p.m. They spent hours moving between enquiry desks, checking phones for any updates on their missing relatives. Sarita Devi was specifically looking for four family members, including her husband. Outside the Max Super Speciality Hospital in Saket, approximately 50 family members had gathered by the afternoon, united by fear and hope.
Vivek Aggarwal, a resident of Gurugram, had rented rooms at the Flourish Stay facility for a specific purpose: to be close to his father, Radhe Shyam Aggarwal, who was undergoing intensive care treatment for a lung ailment at Max Hospital. Vivek stayed at the facility with his mother, Premlata; his wife, Tarjani; and their two daughters, Jeeviska and Waria. Also present were Vivek’s aunt and uncle, Kamla and Jhimri Lal Aggarwal, and his cousin, Ashok Goyal, who had traveled from Kishangarh in Uttar Pradesh to visit his father. None of them survived the fire.
Sarita Devi revealed that the family’s gathering was driven by concern for Radhe Shyam’s health. She stated that doctors had informed them his condition had worsened, which prompted close relatives to come from afar. However, the news of the deaths has not yet been shared with the patient. Sarita noted, “We haven’t told Radhe Shyam anything about it yet,” shielding the hospitalized father from the trauma of his family's demise.
Prem Bansal, Vivek’s father-in-law, explained that the choice of the Flourish Stay facility was purely logistical, citing its proximity to the hospital. He recalled a phone call placed just 15 minutes before the fire broke out. Mr. Bansal called his daughter, Tarjani, to ask when they could visit her father-in-law. She answered, stating it was too early in the morning for a visit, and then disconnected. This was the last known contact with many of the victims.
The chaos intensified when Mr. Bansal received a call from Vivek’s brother, Mahender Aggarwal, who reported that the family was trapped in the basement of the hotel. Mahender had arrived at the scene shortly after the initial notification and witnessed flames and smoke billowing from the multi-storey building. His account adds to the urgency and confusion surrounding the evacuation efforts.
Complicating the rescue operations were allegations regarding the building's security measures. Another relative present at the scene accused the Delhi Fire Services of lacking the necessary tools to pry open the B&B’s shutters. According to this account, local residents had to intervene, breaking open windows to allow firefighters access to the interior of the building. This suggests significant barriers to entry during the critical initial moments of the emergency response.
The loss of eight lives in the Flourish Stay incident highlights critical vulnerabilities in short-term rental accommodations near healthcare facilities. The Aggarwal family’s experience, particularly the claim about inaccessible shutters, suggests that standard safety protocols may have failed during the emergency. As authorities investigate the cause of the Malviya Nagar fire, there is likely to be increased scrutiny on the structural integrity and emergency access compliance of bed-and-breakfast establishments in Delhi. This tragedy may prompt stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations for such properties, ensuring that windows and exits are not only accessible but that first responders have the appropriate equipment to manage such incidents without relying on civilian intervention. The emotional toll on the family, who gathered at the Max Super Speciality Hospital for days, underscores the need for better crisis communication channels between hospitals and guest houses in high-risk urban areas.
