A toxic chemical tank in Garden Grove threatens to explode, forcing the mass Orange County evacuation of 40,000 residents amid safety fears.
Approximately 40,000 residents in Orange County, California, are under mandatory evacuation orders as authorities express grave concern that a tank filled with a highly toxic chemical will either leak or explode. This massive Orange County evacuation covers a 9-square-mile area surrounding the affected industrial facility.
The crisis began on Thursday when authorities responded to a vapor release from one of three tanks containing methyl methacrylate (MMA) at a Garden Grove site. The specific tank began to overheat, causing a relief valve and overhead sprinklers to activate in an attempt to cool it. While the other two tanks were deemed safe or neutralized, the primary tank suffered a damaged valve, preventing the removal of its contents and forcing the reinstatement of evacuation orders after they were briefly lifted.
Craig Covey, the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) Division Chief and Unified Incident Commander, provided a stark update late Friday afternoon, noting that while the tank’s temperature has stabilized, this only provides time to manage the crisis. “This is going to happen unless some brilliant guy behind me here figures out how we can mitigate this incident,” Covey said, emphasizing that the tank will eventually fail. He described the substance as highly volatile, toxic, and flammable, stating that the only two outcomes are a crack leading to a leak or a full explosion.
The situation has caused significant disruption, with Garden Grove Police Chief Amir El-Farra reporting that police utilized reverse 911 calls and social media to order evacuations. Despite these efforts, approximately 15% of the population, or about 6,000 residents, refused to leave the zone. The emergency also impacted local infrastructure, with 13 schools and two facilities within the Garden Grove Unified School District evacuating on Friday morning.
Resident Diane Chavira told CNN affiliate KCAL that she was forced to abandon her home suddenly, collecting her four dogs and leaving in haste. The scope of the evacuation is particularly notable given its proximity to major tourist destinations; the site is located about 5 miles from Disneyland and 4 miles from Knott’s Berry Theme Park.
Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, Orange County Health Officer, highlighted the unpredictable nature of the chemical exposure. MMA is heavier than air, but she noted that the air remains safe outside the evacuation zone as no vapor is currently detected in the atmosphere. However, exposure to MMA can cause significant respiratory irritation to the lungs and nasal passages, along with dizziness and nausea. Chinsio-Kwong emphasized that there are few documented cases of human interaction with such large quantities of the chemical, making the potential effects of an explosion difficult to predict.
“The air should be safe outside of the evacuation zone,” Chinsio-Kwong stated, adding that while the chemical has a fruit-like scent, smelling it does not necessarily indicate harmful exposure levels. She urged residents to stay out of the zone entirely due to the limited information available regarding the incident's potential outcome.
OCFA Interim Fire Chief TJ McGovern confirmed that there is no vapor currently escaping the tank, though authorities continue to monitor air quality. The manufacturer’s response team had attempted to mitigate the crisis without success, leaving local authorities with the difficult task of managing the potential fallout. CNN has reached out to GKN Aerospace, the owner of the facility, for further details on their emergency management efforts.
As authorities continue to work with national teams to prevent a disaster, the primary focus remains on public safety. With the tank’s temperature stabilized, officials are buying time to devise a solution, but the risk remains acute. Residents are advised to remain in safe spaces until further notice, as wind direction could spread toxic material if the tank fails. The long-term impact on the community and the industrial site’s operations remains to be seen, but for now, the priority is ensuring no one is in the vicinity when the incident occurs.
