Central Board of Secondary Education reports sophisticated cyber attacks on its post-result portal, prompting a formal police complaint while asserting system integrity.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has initiated legal proceedings against a group of cyber aggressors by filing a formal complaint with the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit of Delhi Police. This action follows a series of coordinated and sophisticated cyber attacks directed at the board’s Post-Result Services Portal. The complaint addresses the potential disruption to lakhs of students relying on the portal for critical post-examination services.
The incident began shortly after the portal’s launch on June 2, designed to facilitate verification and re-evaluation of answer scripts for candidates of the XII Board Examination. Over the subsequent three days, the platform was subjected to repeated cyber assaults. These attacks involved large volumes of malicious traffic originating from multiple IP addresses both within and outside the country. The apparent objective, as assessed by the board, was to destabilize the platform, deny access to legitimate users, and attempt unauthorized extraction of information by elements inimical to national interest.
As of 9:30 pm on June 3, the portal had successfully accepted more than 56,000 applications for verification and re-evaluation. However, the board did not release updated data for June 4 and 5, likely due to the ongoing security measures. In a public statement, CBSE emphasized the high stakes involved, noting that any disruption to the portal’s functioning could adversely impact a large number of stakeholders. Such interference has the potential to cause significant public inconvenience and affect public order, creating dissatisfaction amongst students against the Board.
In response to the nature, scale, and coordinated character of these attacks, CBSE approached the IFSO Unit for a detailed investigation and appropriate legal action against those responsible. Delhi Police has registered a case under Section 66 along with Sector 43 (F) of the IT Act, and the investigation is currently underway. The board stated that despite these malicious attempts, its systems and databases remain secure and uncompromised. No data breach or unauthorized access has been detected, ensuring that student data integrity was maintained throughout the incident.
The attacks were successfully mitigated through continuous 24x7 monitoring and response mechanisms. This effort was bolstered by the support of cybersecurity teams from prominent institutions, including IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, and the Digital India Corporation. Additional support came from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), CERT-In, and other Central Government agencies. Their collaborative response was crucial in neutralizing the threat and ensuring the portal's operational stability.
The CBSE cyber attack highlights the increasing vulnerability of large-scale educational infrastructure to organized digital threats. By lodging the complaint with Delhi Police, the board has set a precedent for treating cyber interference with educational services as a serious legal offense impacting public order. The involvement of premier technical institutions like IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras demonstrates a robust national framework for defending critical digital assets. Moving forward, this incident may lead to stricter security protocols for all government educational portals. The board’s assurance of system integrity serves as a vital confidence builder for students and parents. However, the coordinated nature of the attack suggests that future defenses must remain vigilant against evolving tactics used by elements inimical to national interest. Continuous monitoring and inter-agency collaboration will likely remain the cornerstone of safeguarding educational data in the digital age.
