The Bhopal court has extended judicial custody for Samarth and Giribala Singh in the Twisha Sharma death case, allowing the CBI to continue its probe into alleged dowry harassment.
The Bhopal court on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, ordered Samarth Singh, the husband of the deceased, and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh, to 14 days of judicial custody. This decision comes after their remand with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concluded, allowing the agency to continue its probe into the Twisha Sharma death case. The court determined that extended custody was necessary for the ongoing investigation and the recording of additional statements.
The CBI had presented both accused individuals before a local court in connection with the death of the 33-year-old model and allegations of dowry harassment. During the previous remand period, investigators engaged in detailed interrogations of both Singh and his mother. To reconstruct the events leading to Twisha Sharma's demise, the CBI utilized a dummy weighing approximately the same as the victim to recreate the sequence of events at the marital residence. Additionally, all digital evidence seized during the initial phases of the probe was forwarded for forensic examination.
Representing the CBI before the court, the agency explained the necessity for further judicial custody. The probe team informed the judge that they are now moving to record statements from various individuals and witnesses linked to the incident. The CBI indicated that they may seek further remand for the accused if required during this expanded phase of interrogation. Consequently, Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh will remain in judicial custody until June 16, 2026.
The legal proceedings follow the discovery of Twisha Sharma’s body at her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills on the night of May 12. Her family has consistently accused her husband and mother-in-law of subjecting her to mental harassment, physical abuse, and relentless demands for dowry. The initial probe was launched by the Bhopal police following a First Information Report lodged on May 15. However, the case was transferred to the CBI on May 25. This transfer occurred after the victim’s family alleged significant procedural lapses and institutional bias by the local police, prompting a higher-level investigation.
Giribala Singh, a retired district judge, personally appeared in court to challenge aspects of the investigation. She raised serious concerns regarding procedural irregularities committed by the CBI, particularly focusing on the recreation of events that took place on Monday, June 1, 2026. Singh alleged that she was dropped off a few houses away from her home rather than being brought directly, forcing her and the CBI officers to walk the distance to the residence. She described the surroundings as barricaded by the agency during this exercise.
The retired judge further alleged that the investigation was marred by a "media trial." She objected to several news outlets gaining access to footage of the event recreation, which occurred on the terrace of her home where Twisha Sharma was found hanging. Singh claimed that camera personnel from neighboring buildings managed to record parts of the exercise from rooftops. She asserted that the media was actively following her and her son, creating a situation where their lives were "in danger." These allegations prompted the court to grant them protection during their continued custody.
Advocate Ankur Pandey, representing Twisha Sharma’s family, provided context to the court’s protection order. He noted that the accused had previously complained that Samarth’s leg was injured due to media persons when they were produced in court. The court considered this complaint and ensured proper protection for both accused individuals during the judicial custody period.
The conflict between the two sides has been intense, with Giribala Singh holding multiple press conferences until about a week before her arrest. During these public appearances, she publicly accused her daughter-in-law of being a drug addict and suffering from a mental illness. Singh also accused Twisha Sharma’s parents of pushing her into the glamour world at an early age, earning money from her, and later abandoning her. Additionally, Singh alleged that her son was physically assaulted by lawyers of the victim’s family at the Jabalpur court premises on the day of his arrest.
Advocate Anurag Shrivastava, representing the victim’s family, denied these charges in court. He stated that the allegation of assault could be verified through CCTV footage from the Jabalpur court premises. Regarding the current status of the investigation, Shrivastava confirmed that the CBI has moved an application to interrogate several individuals and record the statements of many witnesses. He reiterated that all digital material seized is under forensic scrutiny and that the agency is awaiting both the forensic report and the second post-mortem report to proceed with further legal actions.
The extension of custody for Samarth and Giribala Singh highlights the complexity of the dowry harassment allegations surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death. As the CBI completes its forensic analysis and witness recordings, the case underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in high-profile media-sensitive investigations. The ongoing legal battle will likely intensify as the forensic reports are released, potentially influencing the next phases of the trial and public perception. The court's decision to grant protection also reflects the growing intersection of media scrutiny and judicial processes in modern criminal cases.
