Tens of thousands flee Southern California as a GKN Aerospace facility warns of a looming chemical explosion, forcing massive evacuations and emergency declarations.
In a critical situation unfolding in Southern California, authorities have ordered the Orange County evacuation of roughly 50,000 residents as a massive industrial tank at risk of exploding continues to heat up.
The crisis began Thursday when officials responded to GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove following reports of a vapor release. Orange County Fire Authority Interim Fire Chief TJ McGovern confirmed that one of the facility’s tanks had overheated, activating relief valves and sprinkler systems in an attempt to cool the vessel. However, officials noted that the tank’s valves became "gummed up," preventing adequate cooling. By Friday, temperatures inside the tank had risen to approximately 90 degrees, far exceeding the chemical’s optimal storage temperature of 50 degrees, according to Unified Incident Commander Craig Covey.
The substance in question is methyl methacrylate, or MMA, a toxic chemical that the Environmental Protection Agency warns can cause respiratory issues and skin and eye irritation upon exposure. Orange County Fire Authority Captain Steve Concialdi explained that the team is attempting to solidify the 7,000-gallon load from the outside inward, a process he compared to an ice cube freezing. “It basically gets hard from the outside first, and inside there is still liquid in there until it completely ices over, and that’s what we’re hoping will happen,” Concialdi said, though he warned this method might fail. If the tank cracks or explodes, it could release toxic fumes and cause structural damage across a wide area. Authorities released a blast zone map outlining three rings of potential severe, moderate, and light structural damage.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin told CNN that a low-volume release is the most likely scenario, but he emphasized that the environmental response scale would depend on whether the tank fails. “Right now, this is an emergency response. This isn’t yet an environmental response, and the scale of that environmental response will be determined based off of what happens when that tank fails,” Zeldin stated. Despite EPA monitors detecting no contaminants in the air as of Saturday evening, residents within the evacuation zone reported symptoms. Stanton resident Van Ly and Westminster resident Miguel Loo described experiencing sore throats, dizziness, and headaches, though health officials note these symptoms can occur without dangerous exposure levels.
GKN Aerospace, which describes its Garden Grove location as a leading provider of military and commercial aircraft transparency systems, issued a statement apologizing to evacuated residents and businesses. The company stated it is working with emergency services to ensure safety but did not address its history of regulatory violations. A 2020 inspection by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) revealed that GKN had failed to maintain required records for VOC emissions and operated unpermitted equipment. This led to a notice of violation in 2021 and a civil penalty of roughly $900,000. The AQMD noted that subsequent notices to comply were issued in March of the previous year, but the company failed to fully resolve the issues.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced an anonymous tip line for information regarding the incident or GKN’s industrial operations, emphasizing the need for thorough investigation given the real risk to human life. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, mobilizing state resources to support local responders. As the Memorial Day weekend proceeds, the Red Cross has opened shelters at Golden West College and other locations, while hotels offer discounted rates. Despite efforts by officials to contain the threat, the community remains in a state of high alert as the temperature inside the tank continues to rise.
