President Xi Jinping has arrived in Pyongyang for a rare, high-profile visit to North Korea, marking his first foreign trip of 2026. This diplomatic journey carries significant weight as it signals Beijing’s strategic priorities for the year while intersecting with complex regional alliances.
The arrival was marked by a grand welcome at Kim Il Sung Square, where Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan were greeted by Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju. State media reported that military bands played and jubilant crowds waved flags, underscoring the ceremonial importance of the event. Xi reviewed the guard of honor of the Korean People’s Army, with troops shouting wishes for his health in Korean. Footage showed children presenting flowers to the leaders, emphasizing the personal and familial dimensions of the visit.
This visit is particularly notable given the shifting geopolitical landscape. China remains North Korea’s most critical economic partner, accounting for the majority of its official trade. Despite international sanctions, bilateral trade rose 22% in the first two months of 2026 compared to the previous year. North Korea relies on China for essential imports, including fuel, food, and machinery, while using Chinese ports for many of its exports, such as fake hair, minerals, and watch components.
However, the dynamics of this relationship have evolved. Kim Jong Un has significantly consolidated ties with Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. An estimated 11,000 North Korean soldiers have reportedly been sent to fight in Ukraine, receiving food, money, and technical support in return. Professor Ian Chong of the National University of Singapore noted that this reliance on Moscow for oil and raw materials may make Pyongyang less dependent on China. Additionally, Pyongyang has revised its constitution to remove references to reunification with the South, indicating a more hostile stance toward Seoul.
South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung emphasized that the goal of denuclearization must remain central, noting that North Korea continues to produce nuclear material. While Seoul hopes Xi Jinping will encourage dialogue with Washington and Seoul, experts believe resuming inter-Korean talks is not a high priority for Beijing. The visit comes shortly after Xi Jinping hosted US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in China, showcasing his ability to maintain rapport with all major powers.
The symbolism of this visit extends beyond immediate diplomatic gestures. Observers are closely watching whether Kim Jong Un’s daughter, Ju Ae, will be formally introduced to Xi Jinping. Although she accompanied her father to Beijing last year, a formal meeting here could fuel succession speculation, potentially framed as a family-to-family encounter rather than a political endorsement.
As Xi Jinping continues to navigate complex relationships with the US, Russia, and its neighbors, this trip highlights Beijing’s efforts to balance its influence in East Asia. With North Korea pivoting closer to Moscow and adopting a hardened stance against the South, China’s role as a stabilizing economic force remains critical. The outcome of these discussions will likely influence regional security dynamics and the broader strategy for denuclearization and peace on the peninsula in the coming months.
