Congress leader Pawan Khera demands answers on foreign properties and shell companies linked to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, intensifying political tensions before the polls.
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Pawan Khera has intensified his political assault on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, by posing a series of demanding questions regarding their official disclosures. Khera specifically queried the absence of details concerning overseas properties and shell companies, asserting that he will present further evidence as the controversy grows. This escalation occurs just ahead of the crucial Assam assembly elections, transforming a dispute over affidavits into a full-blown political war of words.
In a press conference, Khera directly questioned the transparency of the CM's family, asking why the CM allegedly concealed details of properties linked to his wife in official documents. He demanded to know if they were denying ownership of property in Dubai or a company in America, highlighting a potential concealment of foreign assets. Khera warned that he would provide "much more evidence every day" and a lot more, questioning why the CM would hide such information from his election affidavit. The remarks have triggered a severe response, with the CM announcing legal action against the Congress leader.
Himanta Biswa Sarma has firmly rejected all accusations, dismissing them as malicious and politically motivated lies designed to mislead the people of Assam. In a post on X, Sarma categorically rejected every allegation made by Khera, stating that he and his wife will initiate both criminal and civil defamation proceedings within the next 48 hours. He emphasized his complete faith in the judiciary, asserting that once the truth is established, Khera will face the full consequences of his reckless and defamatory statements.
During his press conference, Khera raised multiple serious allegations beyond just property ownership, including claims regarding passport holdings and financial structures. He specifically questioned the necessity of Sarma's wife holding three passports, asking rhetorically if this was preparation for fleeing the country after an election loss. Khera also alleged that the CM has parked his money in shell companies set up in Wyoming, USA, citing the lack of taxation as the reason for this location choice.
Khera claimed that Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife, Rinki Bhuyan Sarma, owns a company in Wyoming, and the member list of this company includes the CM, his wife, and their son. He called for an investigation by the central government, asking when Home Minister Amit Shah would set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or when Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar would take cognizance of the hidden information.
Sarma, however, rejected these claims and pointed to what he described as serious discrepancies in the documents cited by Khera, suggesting that the documents may have been fabricated or manipulated. He maintained that the entire controversy is part of a politically motivated campaign designed to influence the Assam assembly elections rather than a genuine inquiry into governance. The political row has now escalated significantly, with both sides preparing for a legal battle while the public awaits further developments in this high-stakes political confrontation.
Himanta Biswa Sarma's decision to file defamation cases signals a hardening stance against the Congress leader's campaign, suggesting that the legal system will play a central role in the upcoming electoral narrative. With the CM promising to hold Khera fully accountable, the focus may shift from the initial allegations to the credibility of the evidence presented by both parties in court. Given the intensity of the rhetoric and the specific nature of the accusations regarding foreign assets and citizenship, the legal proceedings could prolong the controversy well into the polling period. If the court validates Sarma's claim of fabrication, it could significantly damage the Congress leader's standing in the state, whereas any delay in adjudication might keep the issue alive as a primary election battleground. The outcome of these legal actions will likely define the tone of the Assam assembly elections and the public's trust in the political discourse of the region.
