A Hyderabad woman alleges a harrowing ordeal of drugging, sexual assault, and forced conversion to Islam by her husband and his family, sparking a criminal investigation.
A woman in Hyderabad has filed serious allegations against her husband, Nawaz (also known as Navadurga), and his extended family. She claims they drugged her, subjected her to sexual assault, and forcibly converted her to Islam. The accusations, detailed in a statement to ANI, paint a picture of deception, physical abuse, financial exploitation, and religious coercion that began in 2021.
The ordeal reportedly started in May 2021, when Nawaz approached the woman to rent a shop she had listed on NoBroker. He allegedly misrepresented himself, claiming to have converted to Hinduism and adopted the name Navadurga to gain her trust. After paying the first month's rent and deposit on May 18, 2021, the relationship began to deepen. The couple married on July 28, 2021, but the woman alleges that while they had previously claimed he was a Hindu, they forcibly converted her to Islam shortly after the wedding.
The most harrowing incident described by the victim occurred on May 24, 2021. The accused had invited her to a resort under the pretense of meeting his family, who had previously spoken to her via video call. When his family failed to arrive on schedule, Nawaz insisted they go to the resort first to eat lunch and drinks. Despite her hesitation, he pressured her to consume the food and beverages. "About an hour and a half later, he brought the food and juice again and pressured me to consume them. Shortly after, I lost consciousness," the victim stated. She woke up the next morning at 11:00 AM feeling unwell and in pain. Upon checking with the receptionist, she discovered that only one room had been booked, revealing that she had been lured into a trap.
When confronted, Nawaz allegedly admitted, "While you were unconscious, I got physical with you and did whatever I wanted." He showed her compromising images taken while she was passed out and used them to blackmail her into marriage, promising to delete the photos once they were wed. The woman alleges that this single event initiated a period of sustained and intimidation. She claims she was coerced into transferring Rs 16.7 lakh and subjected to physical assault and threats. Between June and July 2021, the family allegedly defrauded her of significant wealth, taking loans in her name, using her credit cards, and selling her land in Shamshabad without her consent.
The financial toll was severe. The woman estimates total losses at Rs 25-30 lakh, including significant amounts of gold. She detailed that her husband and his family took money under the guise of starting a business, while her brother-in-law claimed to have lost a 'Hawala note,' threatening violence against her family. In June, brothers and friends allegedly physically assaulted her. The family allegedly threatened to kill or kidnap her mother and sister if she spoke out, claiming they would stage a natural death to hide the crime. The woman stated that the entire family, including Munawar, Shahrukh, Sohail, Sameer, Ismail, Reshma, and Nasima, was involved in the plot.
Following the marriage on July 28, the woman alleges she was forcibly converted to Islam and renamed "Nazeera." She claims she was forced to read the Kalma and verses from the Quran, contrary to her wishes. Furthermore, she alleges she was coerced into eating beef despite being a vegetarian, resulting in physical altercations where she was hit and had her clothes torn in front of others. The victim described a pattern of ongoing physical and emotional torture, stating that the family took all her devices and prevented her from performing any pooja at home.
In August 2021, the woman alleges she became pregnant and was forced to undergo an abortion. She claims an Imam came to their home to facilitate the conversion, and she was given medicine to terminate the pregnancy. The family allegedly prevented her from doing religious rituals and continued to mix substances in her food to induce unconsciousness. She noted that after her mother was forced to leave their home, the family told her that under their interpretation of Muslim law, if Nawaz pronounced Talaq three times, she would be divorced and free to marry anyone in the family.
The woman alleges that when she approached the police in January, her complaint was mishandled. She claims she filed a fraud case, but authorities registered it as a "missing person" case instead. She further accused the accused of wielding influence over local officials, noting that the man who allegedly raped her spoke nicely to the police inspector and sub-inspector. Despite repeated complaints, she claims no action was taken, allowing the accused to continue their alleged activities.
The allegations made by the woman in Hyderabad suggest a complex intersection of financial fraud, religious coercion, and violent crime. If the reported influence over local officials is proven, it could indicate systemic challenges in investigating cases involving powerful family networks. The pattern of shifting legal strategies, such as reclassifying a fraud case as a missing person inquiry, points to potential procedural hurdles. Looking forward, if the investigation proceeds without obstruction, the case could set a significant precedent regarding the prosecution of forced religious conversions and the use of blackmail in marital disputes. The long-term impact on the local community and law enforcement's credibility will likely depend on the thoroughness of the upcoming judicial proceedings.
