The DMK has officially announced its full roster of 164 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, revealing key returns and new faces.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) officially released its comprehensive DMK candidate list on Saturday, March 28, 2026, just in time for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026. The party has nominated a total of 164 individuals to contest the legislative polls across the state. This announcement confirms the party's lineup after days of speculation regarding key leadership roles and ticket distribution.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will once again seek a mandate from his constituents in Kolathur, a seat he has held since its creation following delimitation. His participation marks his fourth consecutive contest for the constituency, following wins in 2011, 2016, and 2021. Similarly, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has been retained as the candidate for the Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni constituency in Chennai.
In a move to dispel recent rumors, the leadership confirmed that General Secretary Duraimurugan will also return to the fray. First elected in 1971, Duraimurugan is contesting for the 13th time from Katpadi. He has a historic track record, having won ten assembly elections in his career. This decision solidifies the party's intent to retain experienced veterans in critical positions.
However, the announcement also brought surprising changes for several sitting leaders. Textiles and Handlooms Minister R. Gandhi, Dairy Development Minister Mano Thangaraj, and Human Resources Management Minister Kayalvizhi Selvaraj have been denied tickets for the current election cycle. Additionally, former Environment and Forest Minister K. Ramachandran has opted out of the race citing health reasons, while former Minister N. Suresh Rajan has been dropped from the Kanniyakumari district lineup.
Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam has been announced as the candidate for Bodinayakanur. The party has also orchestrated significant shifts, including the movement of former Minister V. Senthilbalaji from Karur district to Coimbatore South. This seat was previously won by the Bharatiya Janata Party's Vanathi Srinivasan in the 2021 election, making it a high-stakes contest. In Egmore, the DMK has fielded Tamilan Prasanna, a well-known television debate veteran, to defend the party's stance in the SC constituency.
The new roster highlights a strong preference for family lineages, particularly in constituencies previously won by senior leaders. Former Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy, who recently resigned from the party ministry, has been dropped from the ticket. His son, Gautham Sigamani, has been nominated from the Tirukovilur constituency, which Ponmudy had won in 2021.
Vinoth Gandhi, the son of Textiles Minister R. Gandhi, has been named the candidate from Ranipet, even though his father has not been allotted a seat himself. In Royapuram, the party has selected A. Subair Khan, an orthopaedic surgeon and son of the late former Union Minister A. Rahman Khan. In Madurai district's Tirumangalam, Sedappati Manimaran, son of former Assembly Speaker Sedapatti Muthiah, has been fielded to represent the party.
Political rivalries within families also feature prominently in the list. In Andipatti, A. Maharajan will contest for his third consecutive term against his own brother, A. Logirajan. The party has named N. Chitrarasu for Anna Nagar. In Villivakkam, Karthik Mohan, son of MLA M.K. Mohan, will face off against Aadhav Arjuna of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Arjuna, a former political strategist for Udhayanidhi Stalin, previously worked closely with the Deputy CM before entering electoral politics. The Villivakkam seat was last won in 2021 by A. Vetriazhagan, grandson of former DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan.
The full list covers a wide spectrum of constituencies, ranging from Alandur to Yercaud, ensuring representation across urban and rural divides. With the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 approaching, this strategic deployment of candidates aims to consolidate the party's base while introducing fresh faces alongside experienced veterans to face the political challenges of the upcoming polls.
The strategic deployment of family members and experienced veterans alongside fresh faces signals the DMK's calculated approach to the 2026 polls. With M.K. Stalin leading the charge from Kolathur and the party retaining key leaders like Duraimurugan, the organization appears focused on stability. However, the exclusion of several sitting ministers suggests a potential internal restructuring or a strategic pivot toward newer political alliances. The contest in Coimbatore South and the intra-family battle in Andipatti highlight the competitive nature of the upcoming election, which will likely redefine the political landscape of Tamil Nadu in the coming months.
