A deadly bomb blast claiming two young lives in Manipur has ignited violent clashes, prompting an immediate indefinite curfew and a high-level NIA investigation.
The state of Manipur has descended into renewed crisis following a deadly bomb blast in Bishnupur district that claimed the lives of two young children. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in the Tronglaobi Awang Leikai area, has triggered violent protests, clashes with security forces, and a complete lockdown across the valley districts. In response to the escalating violence and the loss of innocent lives, the state government has imposed an indefinite curfew in four districts and handed over the investigation to the National Investigation Agency.
The tragedy unfolded around 1:05 am when suspected militants hurled a bomb at the home of a family, killing a five-year-old boy and a five-month-old girl. Their mother was also injured in the explosion and admitted to the hospital. The blast ignited immediate and widespread anger in the area, leading to violent demonstrations. Protesters blocked the Imphal-Tidim Road and set several trucks ablaze. The situation escalated further when a mob stormed a CRPF camp near Gelmol, torching vehicles and vandalizing property. Security personnel opened fire on the mob, resulting in at least two more deaths and five injuries.
In the aftermath of this devastation, the Manipur government moved swiftly to contain the situation. District magistrates of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Kakching issued separate orders mandating an indefinite curfew effective immediately. The notification, valid until further notice, prohibits all movement outside residences, though exemptions remain for government agencies maintaining law and order and essential emergency services. Earlier that day, the government had already suspended internet and mobile data services, including broadband, VSATs, and VPNs, for three days across five valley districts to prevent the spread of misinformation and calm the law and order situation.
The political and security response has been severe and coordinated. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced that the state government has decided to hand over the probe into the blast to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Singh described the attack as the work of individuals or groups with vested interests in disturbing the state's peace. "The culprits will be caught at the earliest," the CM assured, noting that a massive search operation is underway. This operation involves combined forces of the State Police, Assam Rifles, and CRPF, supported by helicopter surveillance. Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh described the attackers as "peace disruptors" and ordered their capture dead or alive during a high-level security meeting.
The government has also taken steps to bolster security in the region. Commandos have been redeployed to hill areas after a long gap, utilizing bulletproof vehicles to strengthen security operations. This marks a significant escalation in the state's defensive posture. The Chief Minister visited the injured family members at Raj Medicity Hospital in Imphal and announced ex gratia assistance for the victims' families, urging the public to cooperate with security operations aimed at restoring peace. He appealed to the citizens to "not give in to emotions" while the forces work to locate the perpetrators.
Political leaders across the spectrum have condemned the incident. Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed deep pain over the loss of innocent lives, labeling the attack a horrific act against civilians, particularly children. Local MLA Thongam Shanti Singh characterized the event as a heinous act of violence and an act of terrorism. These strong condemnations highlight the unified political front against the violence.
The imposition of a federal probe via the NIA probe signalizes a critical shift in how the state is addressing this internal security challenge. Given the CM's assurance that the culprits will be caught soon and the aggressive deployment of forces including commandos and air surveillance, a resolution through law enforcement appears to be the immediate priority. However, the severity of the protests and the specific targeting of children suggest a deep-seated grievance that requires sustained political engagement beyond just security measures. If the government can successfully arrest the perpetrators and provide justice to the families, it may serve as a catalyst for de-escalation. Conversely, failure to address the root causes or the perception of impunity could prolong the cycle of violence and curfews in the valley districts.
