Heroic actions by Captain Smit Machchhar and passengers turned a potential tragedy into a miracle on Flydubai Flight FZ1073, preventing a catastrophic crash.
The “hero” Indian captain of Flydubai Flight FZ1073 described a harrowing 12-minute battle for survival after being stabbed by his copilot, leading to a dramatic mid-air rescue.
In a video call from his hospital bed, Captain Captain Smit Machchhar recounted the moment he realized the aircraft was plummeting toward the ground. He knew he had to open the cockpit door, which is typically locked during flights, to allow help to enter. His decision to fight through his injuries enabled passengers and crew to storm the cockpit, subdue the attacker, and regain control of the plane just in time to prevent a catastrophic crash.
The incident began on Wednesday at 7:05am when Flight FZ1073 departed Dubai for Tel Aviv, climbing to 34,000ft. Just over two hours into the flight, the aircraft suddenly began to descend. Flightradar24 data shows the plane plunged, rose briefly, and then plummeted again. By 05:33 GMT, after 12 minutes of erratic movement, it was flying at 15,000ft before leveling out.
Passenger Adam Polo described the initial fall as feeling like a "normal air pocket," but the acceleration quickly became abnormal. He noted that electricity, multimedia systems, and air conditioning failed simultaneously. "People that were standing in the aisle or just going to the toilet, they fell. Anyone that wasn’t sitting fell," Polo told CNN. He compared the experience to the "craziest roller coaster that you ever did but multiplied by a thousand."
The descent was steep and rapid, with the plane dropping more than 17,000ft in two minutes. Passengers reported chaos, screaming, and multiple waves of turbulence. United States President Donald Trump later noted the severity of the situation, stating, "The plane was going sharply down at an unbelievable angle, so sharp that the rudder ripped off the back of the plane." He added that the aircraft was "well beyond its limits" and not designed for such speeds or angles.
The root of the crisis was a violent attack inside the cockpit. Copilot attacks Indian captain Captain Smit Machchhar, stabbing him and causing him to fall to the floor. Machchhar, lying on the cockpit floor and grievously wounded, made a critical decision. "I was lying on the floor injured, but I told myself to go for one last push to open the door from inside," he told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Netanyahu’s spokesperson, Doron Spielman, explained that despite being bloodied, Machchhar used his remaining energy to click open the release on the cockpit door. "Others came in and also played a role. I was, of course, fighting for my own life, but at the same time, I knew I was not going to let others die," Machchhar said.
The door opening allowed passengers to see the attacker standing over the control panel, bashing it. Israeli passenger Asaf Rajuan, who helped restrain the copilot, described the event as being "just like in the movies." Another passenger, Yaniv Hayun, who was referred to by Trump as an "Israeli plumber," recounted entering the cockpit to find the captain lying by the door. "When I went in, I saw the terrorist on the controls... I grabbed the terrorist, put him in a hold and first of all pulled him outside," Hayun said.
Once the attacker was pulled into the cabin, passengers used corded headphones to tie him up while a dentist, Shota Musayev, tended to the captain’s injuries. Musayev, the only doctor on board, managed to stop the bleeding and stabilize Machchhar’s blood pressure. "I was the only doctor on the plane, and eventually, I managed to stop the bleeding and stabilise his blood pressure," Musayev said. He believes his emergency treatment helped save the captain’s life.
Hayun then rushed back into the cockpit to take control. "I jumped back in there, grabbed the controls, started pulling the controls," he said, referencing his knowledge from the TV series Mayday. A pilot traveling in the back of the plane eventually arrived and took over, allowing the aircraft to level out. At 05:28 GMT, the plane transmitted the international emergency code 7700 while flying near the Saudi Arabia-Jordan border.
The aftermath of the incident highlighted the bravery of those involved. Netanyahu praised Machchhar as a "true hero" who demonstrated "extraordinary bravery" and saved 174 lives. Modi also praised the captain’s courage, patience, and quick decision-making, stating that all of India was proud of him.
Machchhar, who has been flying for 17 years, was initially airlifted from Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, to Abu Dhabi, UAE, for further treatment. The Indian embassy in the UAE reported that he is "in good health and recovering well." The Indian embassy in Riyadh confirmed he was admitted to a hospital in stable condition, awaiting a full health update.
Passengers and authorities alike have commended the collective effort that averted disaster. Musayev noted, "Together with a few brave people on the plane, we managed to avert a situation that was very close to a disaster." The incident stands as a testament to the quick actions and resilience of the crew and passengers on Flydubai Flight FZ1073.
The dramatic events aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 have intensified global discussions regarding cockpit security protocols and pilot fitness monitoring. The incident, where a captain was stabbed by a copilot, raises critical questions about the vulnerability of flight decks to internal threats. Airlines may need to reassess cockpit door mechanisms and emergency access procedures to ensure they can be operated effectively even under violent duress, as seen when Machchhar forced the release. Additionally, the role of passengers in mitigating such crises highlights the potential need for enhanced passenger awareness training or clearer emergency protocols. The high-level political responses from leaders like Modi, Netanyahu, and Trump underscore the international gravity of the event. Future aviation regulations may prioritize stricter mental health screenings for flight crew and more robust physical safeguards in cockpit access points to prevent similar mid-air hostilities.
