Flydubai Flight FZ1073 plunged 17,000ft before passengers and crew intervened to save the aircraft. Captain Smit Machchhar’s bravery prevented a catastrophe.
The terrifying saga of Flydubai Flight FZ1073 unfolded on Wednesday when the aircraft began an uncontrolled descent shortly after departing Dubai for Tel Aviv. As the plane hurtled toward the ground, a violent struggle inside the cockpit set off a chain of events that would ultimately save 174 lives through sheer human resilience and quick action.
In a video call from his hospital bed in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, the Indian captain described the harrowing moment he realized the aircraft was plummeting. Captain Smit Machchhar told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he felt the plane dropping and knew he had a "last chance" to act. With his life hanging in the balance, he managed to click open the release on the locked cockpit door while lying bloodied on the floor, allowing others to enter the critical zone of the flight deck.
The situation had escalated dangerously fast. Flight data shows that at 7:05am, the plane climbed to 34,000ft before beginning a sudden descent. By 05:21 GMT, it had started a steep drop. Passenger Adam Polo described the initial fall as feeling like a normal air pocket, but the acceleration quickly became abnormal. He noted that electricity, multimedia systems, and air conditioning failed simultaneously. People standing in the aisle were thrown to the floor, and the cabin descended more than 17,000ft in just two minutes, creating a chaotic environment comparable to "the craziest roller coaster... multiplied by a thousand."
As the plane fell, a life-or-death battle erupted in the cockpit. The copilot attacked Captain Machchhar, stabbing him severely. Despite his injuries, the captain refused to let the disaster proceed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesperson, Doron Spielman, explained that Machchhar drew on his "last moments of energy" to open the door. This single act enabled passengers and crew to storm the cockpit and overpower the attacker.
Among those who rushed forward was Yaniv Hayun, an Israeli plumber referred to by US President Donald Trump. Trump described Hayun as strong from his daily work lifting pipes and noted that he heard screaming before ripping the attacker from his seat. Hayun later recounted in a TV interview that he and other passengers entered the cockpit to find the injured captain on the ground and the attacking pilot bashing the control panel. Hayun grabbed the attacker, put him in a hold, and pulled him outside the control area.
Meanwhile, the cabin was in absolute turmoil. US President Trump remarked that the rudder ripped off the back of the plane due to the unbelievable speed and angle, stating the aircraft was "well beyond its limits." Passengers heard shouting and screaming as the plane continued to plummet. Asaf Rajuan, another Israeli passenger who helped restrain the copilot, described the event as being "like in the movies," expressing disbelief that such violence could occur in real life.
Once the attacker was pulled into the cabin, passengers spent several minutes restraining him using corded headphones. Some reports indicated the copilot was shouting "Kill me!" during the struggle. A dentist named Shota Musayev, traveling home to Israel from China, ran into the cockpit upon hearing the screams. He found the captain in "real bad shape" with heavy bleeding, particularly from his head. Musayev, the only doctor on board, managed to stop the bleeding and stabilize the captain's blood pressure, likely saving his life. He also helped tie the attacker's hands and legs.
After securing the attacker, Yaniv Hayun made a desperate move. Admitting he had never flown a plane but having watched the TV series Mayday, he jumped back into the cockpit and grabbed the controls. He described pulling the controls to level the aircraft. At that moment, another pilot who had been traveling farther back in the plane arrived. The pilot took over, and the aircraft began to level out.
By 05:33 GMT, 12 minutes after the descent began, the plane was flying at roughly 15,000ft and leveling out. It transmitted the transponder code 7700, indicating a general emergency, while flying near the Saudi Arabia-Jordan border. The incident has drawn widespread praise for the passengers and crew who acted with extraordinary courage. Netanyahu praised Machchhar as a "true hero" who saved 174 people. Indian Prime Minister Modi commended the captain's courage and quick decision-making, stating all of India was proud of him.
The captain’s recovery is ongoing. The Indian embassy in the UAE reported that Machchhar was airlifted to Abu Dhabi after receiving initial treatment in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. He is currently in stable condition and recovering well. The embassy in Riyadh noted that a full update on his health is awaited but expressed hope for his early recovery.
This event serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in aviation security and the potential for individual heroism in the face of catastrophic failure. The rapid intervention of passengers like Hayun and Musayev, combined with the captain’s final act of defiance, highlights how crucial immediate, coordinated human action is in averting disaster when technology and protocol fail.
The dramatic events on Flydubai Flight FZ1073 have ignited urgent discussions regarding cockpit door security and pilot mental health screening. The ability of passengers to breach the cockpit and take control suggests that current protocols may be insufficient against determined internal threats. Future regulations will likely mandate reinforced cockpit doors that can be opened from the inside under duress without compromising security, as well as enhanced training for crews on internal conflict resolution. Additionally, the psychological monitoring of pilots will become a paramount focus for airlines worldwide to prevent similar incidents, ensuring that such a tragedy does not repeat itself.
