A deadly crush occurred at Bihar's sacred shrine, claiming eight lives and leaving dozens wounded as panic overwhelmed a crowded festival gathering on Tuesday morning.
A fatal crowd crush erupted on Tuesday morning at the Madhda Sheetla Temple in Bihar, resulting in eight deaths and six injuries. The Sheetla Mata temple stampede occurred during Sheetalashtami prayers when a massive gathering turned chaotic following a sudden rumor.
The incident unfolded in the Maghra area of Bihar Sharif on the last Tuesday of the Chaitra month, a time traditionally marked by a massive influx of devotees. As footfall remained heavy since the early morning hours, the situation escalated rapidly into a stampede-like situation after panic swept through the crowd. A local resident identified as Lalit Kumar told news agency ANI that the surge happened because barricades broke. He noted that the crowd was exceptionally large due to it being both Mahavir Jayanti and a Tuesday. Panic spread quickly, causing several people to fall and be trampled in the surge. The injured were immediately rushed to a government hospital in Bihar Sharif, where they are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries.
The aftermath has left families in deep mourning, with grief visibly overwhelming a relative at the hospital as they await news about the lost lives. Local residents, alongside police officers and administrative officials, immediately mobilized to conduct rescue efforts and transport the victims for aid. The severity of the event was highlighted by eyewitnesses, including a devotee from Patna, who told ANI that they were prevented from entering the site and were sent away after deaths were confirmed. This witness also reported that a lathi charge, or baton charge, took place during the chaos.
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary reacted swiftly to the Nalanda temple tragedy by posting on social media, describing the incident as "extremely heartbreaking." He expressed deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and those who were injured. In his statement, the Deputy CM confirmed that the state government is extending all possible assistance and relief to the affected families. Furthermore, he assured the public that arrangements have been made to ensure the proper and immediate treatment of the injured individuals. He concluded his message by praying for peace for the departed souls and strength for the grieving families, while wishing for a speedy recovery for the survivors.
The Madhda Sheetla Temple has faced a significant crisis, with the tragedy underscoring the dangers of uncontrolled crowds during major religious festivals. The event mirrors a similar incident last November at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Srikakulam district, where a crowd surge killed at least nine people, including eight women and a 13-year-old boy. That previous tragedy also occurred during a religious celebration, Karthika Ekadashi, when an estimated 25,000 devotees gathered, far exceeding the shrine's capacity and causing the situation to spiral out of control.
Given the pattern of high footfall and the reported failure of barricades in the recent Sheetla Mata temple stampede, there is a strong likelihood that similar high-profile events will face increased scrutiny. With Bihar also hosting significant academic events, such as the upcoming convocation of Nalanda University where President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to address 617 graduating students from 31 countries, the state administration faces the dual challenge of facilitating large gatherings while ensuring crowd safety. The convergence of religious fervor and high-profile political visits suggests that future events will require more rigorous crowd management protocols to prevent the recurrence of such devastating losses. The state's commitment to providing relief, as stated by the Deputy CM, will likely expand into a broader review of safety measures at major shrines to ensure that capacity limits are strictly enforced to protect the lives of millions who visit these sacred sites annually.
