
A Special Investigation Team is probing a Nashik IT Company where victims allege forced religious conversion and sexual harassment, with eight women filing complaints against the multinational firm.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is currently probing a series of sexual harassment cases at a multinational IT company in Nashik, where eight women employees have alleged mental and sexual harassment over the past few years. Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan stated that the investigation could uncover a wider pattern of misconduct involving senior employees who allegedly ignored complaints.
The probe has intensified after seven people, including an assistant general manager for HR, were arrested in connection with the allegations. Police confirmed that the HR official was detained for allegedly abetting sexual harassment by failing to act on a complaint raised by a woman employee against colleagues. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Mitke, who is heading the SIT, indicated that the inquiry is far from over, noting that more arrests and custodial actions are likely. The court has remanded the HR manager to police custody until April 13, while six other accused individuals were sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Minister Mahajan made serious allegations regarding the nature of the harassment, claiming that victims were forced to offer namaz and eat beef, with attempts made to convert them. He further suggested that the women might have been victims of a racket involving job promises followed by blackmail with photographs and videos. "Some senior employees, including women, did not take any action despite complaints," Mahajan said, adding that a case has been filed against these inactioners and that the inquiry is underway. He warned that the involvement of more people will likely come to light.
The police have registered nine FIRs since March 26, covering cases of sexual harassment, breach of promise to marry, and allegations of hurting religious sentiments. These incidents are said to have taken place between 2022 and 2026. In one specific instance, investigators allege that the HR official ignored a complaint of sexual harassment, allowing the accused employees to continue their actions. Assistant public prosecutor Aniket Avhad emphasized the gravity of this negligence, stating, "Had this HR official taken note of the complaint, the other crimes would not have taken place. The ignorance of the HR official only encouraged the accused to indulge in sexual harassment of the victims."
However, the defense lawyer Baba Sayyad argued against further custodial remand, stating that police had not recovered any material evidence from the accused. Despite this, ACP Mitke confirmed that the Special Investigation Team is actively trying to track down a co-accused woman employee named in an earlier case involving sexual assault and hurting religious sentiments. This individual has been absconding since the complaint was filed on March 25, and authorities are using technical surveillance and intelligence inputs to secure her arrest.
The District Collector, Ayush Prasad, has ordered a probe into compliance with the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH Act) at the company. The inquiry will determine if the IT company has been taking necessary steps, including the proper registration of complaints and maintaining proactive vigilance as mandated by the law. Officials stated that the district-level committee will examine whether the Internal Committee mandated under the PoSH Act existed and whether it functioned properly.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised the police action, describing the sexual exploitation and the hurting of religious sentiments at the IT firm as shocking. "I would like to congratulate the police for acting swiftly and exposing the matter," he said. The Nashik IT Company, which employs around 300 people, remains under scrutiny as the SIT continues to investigate all nine cases registered against its employees. ACP Mitke expressed confidence that the arrest of the absconding suspect is imminent as the investigation expands to determine if this reflects a larger trend within major corporate environments.
