Amid rising scrutiny over the TCS Nashik unit, a relative of an accused person dismisses the sexual harassment allegations as a staged plot involving Bajrang Dal, as legal proceedings intensify.
The intense scrutiny surrounding allegations of sexual harassment at the TCS Nashik unit has been met with a defiant response from the family of one of the accused. A relative has publicly declared that the incident is not a major scandal but rather a scripted event orchestrated by Bajrang Dal. This claim emerges as a Nashik court orders police custody for two individuals in connection with the serious allegations of sexual harassment and forced religious conversion. The uncle alleges a wider conspiracy is driving the narrative, asserting that families are being troubled by a premeditated plan.
Speaking to the press, the relative outlined a specific theory behind the unfolding legal drama, suggesting that the Bajrang Dal was directly involved in instigating the situation. He claimed that the girl's family initiated contact with the organization, leading to the current state of affairs. According to him, the initial investigation resulted in one person being released, only for him to be arrested again by the police, reinforcing the belief that the sequence of events was scripted. The uncle emphasized that while minor issues are being exaggerated, the main substantive issues remain ignored by the media and authorities. He stated clearly that the case appears to be false, with allegations made without the backing of strong evidence, and reiterated that it is not the major scandal it is being portrayed as.
Legal proceedings continue to move swiftly in the wake of these developments. On Thursday, a Nashik court granted a two-day police custody extension to two accused individuals. These men were arrested fresh on Wednesday after previously being held in judicial custody regarding a related case. The court proceedings followed the production of these accused before the magistrate, who authorized the additional time for police interrogation. The legal framework applied to these arrests is strict, with charges filed under sections 74, 75, and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These sections pertain to outraging the modesty of a woman, sexual harassment, and using words, gestures, acts, or objects intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
The scale of the investigation has expanded significantly as the police move to apprehend those responsible. So far, seven employees have been arrested across nine separate cases. This group includes six male employees working at the TCS Nashik unit and a woman who serves as an HR manager. In response to the gravity of the situation, the police have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the complaints. The complaints were filed by eight women employees who allege they suffered mental and sexual harassment from senior colleagues. Furthermore, these women claim that their initial complaints were ignored by the HR department, leading to an escalation of the issue.
Complicating the allegations are claims of forced religious conversion and insults to religious sentiments. Some of the complainants have alleged that these actions were part of the harassment they faced. The Tata Consultancy Services has responded by stating that it follows a "zero-tolerance" policy on harassment. In adherence to this policy, the company has suspended the employees who are accused in the case. The company leadership has also weighed in on the matter, with Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran describing the allegations as "gravely concerning and anguishing." He confirmed that a detailed investigation is currently underway, led by COO Arathi Subramanian, to address the claims fully.
The fallout from the incident has attracted the attention of national bodies as well. The National Commission for Women has constituted a fact-finding committee specifically to examine the matter. This intervention highlights the severity with which the allegations are being treated by national authorities. The committee's formation suggests an intent to look beyond the initial police investigation and provide an independent assessment of the facts. Meanwhile, the local police have issued a stern warning regarding media conduct. They cautioned that certain media outlets and social media accounts may be revealing the identities of alleged victims. Police stated that such disclosures constitute a criminal offence. They emphasized that revealing these identities causes "immense anguish" to the victims. Consequently, the police have urged strict compliance with the laws designed to protect the identity of victims.
As the legal machinery works through the charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the reputation of the TCS Nashik unit faces an uncertain future. The formation of the SIT and the involvement of the National Commission for Women indicate that the issue will not be resolved quickly. If the allegations of sexual harassment and religious coercion are proven, the impact on the workforce and corporate culture could be profound. The current "zero-tolerance" policy, while a necessary first step, may require additional structural changes to prevent similar occurrences. The police warning against media exposure suggests a heightened sensitivity to the privacy and mental well-being of the victims. The long-term trajectory will likely depend on the findings of the SIT and the fact-finding committee, which will determine whether the "scripted conspiracy" theory holds any water or if the allegations of harassment are substantiated by evidence. The situation remains volatile as the court continues to process the custody extensions and the corporate leadership manages the internal fallout.
